Para dizer “ficar” com o sentido de “permanecer” usamos o verbo to stay.

Why don’t you stay a little longer? – Por que você não fica mais um pouco?
He stayed there, waiting for her. – Ele ficou lá, esperando por ela.

Usamos também o verbo to get quando há uma mudança de estado em expressões como ficar quente (to get hot), ficar frio (to get cold), ficar velho (to get old), ficar com fome (to get hungry), entre outras.

O verbo go é usado com mudanças na personalidade, aparência e habilidade física das pessoas. Também é usado para mudanças bruscas e mudanças de cores mais lentas.

go mad/crazy – ficar louco
go bald – ficar careca
go grey – ficar com cabelo branco
go blind – ficar cego
go deaf – ficar surdo

His face went red when he heard the news. – Ele ficou vermelho de raiva quando ouviu a notícia.
Suddenly the sky went dark and it started to rain. – De repente o céu ficou escuro e começou a chover.
The pages of the book have gone yellow over the years. – As páginas do livro ficaram vermelhas com os anos.

O verbo to turn é usado basicamente com a mudança de cores.

The sky turned gold as the sun set. – O céu ficou dourado com o pôr do sol.
Wait for the tomatoes to turn red before picking them. – Espere os tomates ficarem vermelhos antes de colhê-los.
He had such a shock his hair turned white overnight. – Ele levou um susto tão grande que seu cabelo ficou branco da noite para o dia.
