1. movers and shakers – as pessoas mais influentes na política e na sociedade, “quem manda e desmanda”.
He knows all the movers and shaker in town. – Ele conhece todos os bam-bam-bans da cidade.
Who are the movers and shakers in the group, and how do they operate? – Quem são os manda-chuvas no grupo, e como eles trabalham?
They’ve got to be introduced to people who are movers and shakers to get things going. – Eles têm de ser apresentados às pessoas que mandam e desmandam para as coisas acontecerem.

2. grasp at straws – fazer um esforço inútil; depender de algo que é inútil. Também existe a forma clutch at straws, com o mesmo significado.

4. have a knack for – ter jeito para (fazer algo)
Some people seem to have a knack for getting others to do what they want. – Algumas pessoas levam jeito para convencer as pessas a fazerem o que elas querem.
We may not repeat the old mistakes, but we have a knack for finding new ones. – Podemos não repetir os mesmos erros, mas damos um jeito de encontrar novos.

5. turn out to be – vir a ser

6. hedge one’s bets – não arriscar tudo numa só jogada, precaver-se (literalmente “cercar suas apostas”)
Unless you have a crystal ball or like to gamble, it’s wise to hedge your bets. – A não ser que você tenha uma bola de cristal ou goste de jogar por dinheiro, é melhor se precaver.
Journalists are hedging their bets on the likely outcome of the election. – Os jornalistas estão cuidadosos com o provável resultado das eleições.

7. on a hunch – por palpite, por instinto
I asked her that on a hunch, I had no idea she could help me. – Perguntei aquilo para ela por acaso, não tinha ideia de que ela poderia me ajudar.
The police arrested him on a hunch, without having real evidence. – A polícia o prendeu por palpite, sem ter provas reais.
You should never act on a hunch in cases like this. – Você nunca deve agir por instinto em casos assim.

8. pull out all the stops – fazer todo o possível para que algo aconteça, mover céus e montanhas, não economizar esforços
They pulled out all the stops for their daughter’s wedding. – Eles não pouparam esforços no casamento de sua filha.
The airline certainly pulled out all the stops to impress us. – A companhi aérea não economizou esforços para nos impressionar.
Both sides promise to pull out all the stops, running more TV and newspaper ads and making more phone calls to supporters. – Os dois lados prometem se esforçar ao máximo, fazendo mais anúncios na TV e jornais e ligando mais para os eleitores.
