Na semana passada, vimos várias expressões com o verbo to say (dizer) e hoje aprenderemos várias expressões com o verbo to tell (dizer, contar). Só para relembrar, usamos to tell somone (dizer a alguém). Veja algumas expressões:

As far as I can tell. – Pelo o que eu vejo.
Do as you’re told! – Faça o que te mandam!
‘How old is he?’ ‘That would be telling.’ – ‘Quantos anos ele tem?’ – ‘Isso é segredo.’
I can’t tell the difference. – Não sei dizer a diferença.
I can’t tell them apart. – Eles são idênticos.
I can’t tell you how sorry I am. – Você não tem ideia do quanto eu sinto.
I’ll tell you what:… – Vou te dizer uma coisa…
I’ll tell you, … – Vou lhe dizer…
It’s starting to tell she’s depressed. – Dá pra ver que ela está deprimida.
Jack told on his friend Mark. – Jack dedurou seu amigo Mark.

Josh asked me out, but I told him where to go. – Josh me convidou para sair, mas eu mandei ele às favas.
So they tell me. – É o que dizem.
Something tells me that… – Algo me diz que …
Tell it like it is. – Fale honestamente.
Tell me about it. – Nem me diga…
Tell me another one! – Conte outra! (Nessa eu não acredito!)
Tell me something… – Me diz uma coisa…
The children are learning to tell the time. – As crianças estão aprendendo a ver as horas.
The teacher told me off. – O professor me deu uma bronca.

There’s no telling. – Não dá pra saber.
They’re so alike I can never tell one from the other. – Eles são tão parecidos que não dá para diferenciá-los.
Time will tell. – O tempo dirá.
To tell you the truth,… – Pra dizer a verdade, …
What did I tell you? – O que foi que eu disse?
‘What time will he be back?’ – ‘I couldn’t tell you.’ – ‘Que horas ele voltará?’ – ‘Sei lá.’
You can tell. – Percebe-se.
You tell me. – Sei lá, você que sabe.
You’re telling me. – Não precisa me dizer, eu já sei.
