1. big wig – chefão, executivo.
Jack’s first job was as an assistant. Now he’s a big wig in his company.
O primeiro emprego de Jack foi de assistente. Agora ele é chefão na sua empresa.
Além de big wig (lit. peruca grande), podemos usar os termos big cheese, big shot, biggie, boss man / boss lady, chief, exec, head honcho, higher ups, top brass / big brass / brass, top dog
2. to get called on the carpet – levar uma reprimenda (de um chefe), ser advertido
One more error and you’ll get called on the carpet.
Mais um erro e você vai ser advertido.
Al got called on the carpet for wasting time at work.
Al foi repreendido por perder tempo no trabalho.
Com o mesmo sentido também usamos as expressões to get bawled out, to get chewed out e to get raked over the coals.
3. to can (someone) – demitir (alguém)
He always got to work late, so the boss canned him.
Ele sempre chegava tarde no trabalho, então o chefe o demitiu.
