Hello, there! How’s it going?

Nosso post hoje traz uma expressão muito comum em inglês: bottom line. Literalmente bottom line é um termo de contabilidade usado para se referir ao último número no final de uma conta, o saldo ou o custo total que alguém precisa pagar.

Num contexto mais informal significa o resultado final de algo e pode também ser usado como verdade universal numa situação específica, a moral da história, a parte mais importante.

Vejamos alguns exemplos:

What is the bottom line with this project? Is it going ahead or not? I need to manage all the resources and I need to know what is going on! [Qual é a decisão final sobre este projeto? Vai para frente ou não? Preciso cuidar de todos os recursos e saber o que está acontecendo!]

I am listing the car for sale at $12,000, but my bottom line is $11,250. I don’t think I will be able to go beneath that and still make any money. [Estou colocando o carro à venda por $12.000, mas o preço final pode chegar a $11,250. Acho que não consigo vender por menos e ainda vou ganhar uma grana.]

Seriously, the bottom line is that he needs to find a new job. It isn’t working out here and we will have to let him go by the end of the quarter. [Agora sério, resumindo, ele precisa arranjar um emprego novo. Não está dando certo aqui e teremos que demiti-lo até o final do trimestre.]

Things may change, but the bottom line today is that we are heading for bankruptcy unless sales increase. [As coisas podem mudar, mas o importante é que vamos à falência se as vendas não aumentarem.]

David, my son, you graduated from high school and do nothing all day except watch TV and eat. Bottom line – go get a job or join the military! [David, meu filho, você terminou o ensino médio e não faz nada a não ser assistir TVe comer. De duas uma – vai arranjar um emprego ou se alista no exército!]
