Começamos a semana com um assunto que muitos leitores pedem: o inglês para negócios. Na verdade, o business English nada mais é o inglês focado em vocabulário e situações específicas do ambiente corporativo. E isso também inclui as várias áreas específicas onde ele é usado.

Por isso escolhi dez expressões idiomáticas muito usadas em contextos de negócios e vou compartilhá-las com vocês hoje, all right?

01. Tricks of the trade = macetes do emprego, atalhos

When I started at the company, my colleagues showed me a few tricks of the trade that helped me get up to speed more quickly.

02. Touch base = trocar ideia, conversar

03. Steal a march on = fazer algo antes de alguém (e assim ter vantatem)

Jeff stole a march on all of us when he had his story published.
O Jeff se adiantou à nós quando nos disse que sua história tinha sido publicada.

Our competitor stole a march on us and got the big contract.
Nosso concorrente passou na nossa frente e conseguiu o grande contrato.

04. Be rushed off your feet = estar muito ocupado

There’s only one secretary working for the whole accounts department and the poor woman is run off her feet.
Só tinha uma secretária trabalhando para o departamento de contas inteiro e a coitada estava atarefadíssima.

We weren’t exactly rushed off our feet – there was only one visitor all afternoon.
Nós não estávamos muito ocupados – só tinha um visitante a tarde toda.

05. Raise your game = melhorar o desempenho

They’re going to have to raise their game if they want to stay in the Premier Division this season.
Eles vão ter que melhorar seu desempenho se quiserem ficar na Primeira Divisão nesta temporada.

The chair of the working committee called on the Board members to raise their game.
O diretor do comitê de trabalho convocou os membros da diretoria para melhorar sua performance.

06. Pull your weight = fazer sua parte do trabalho

The rest of the team complained that Sarah wasn’t pulling her weight.
O resto da equipe reclamava que a Sarah não estava fazendo sua parte do trabalho.

In a busy restaurant, everyone has to pull their weight.
Num restaurante cheio, todos têm que fazer sua parte do trabalho.

07. Not up to scratch / snuff = (desempenho, trabalho) insatisfatório, insuficiente

Sorry, your paper isn’t up to scratch. Please do it over again.
Sinto muito, seu trabalho não está satisfatório. Por favor, faça novamente.

His audition was not up to snuff, so he wasn’t called back.
Seu teste não foi satisfatório, então ele não foi chamado de volta.

08. Make money hand over fist = ganhar muito dinheiro

Business was good and we were making money hand over fist.

09. Keep your eye on the ball = manter-se focado em algo (objetivo)

Bill would do better in his classes if he would just keep his eye on the ball.

10. In the pipelines / in the works = sendo preparado, “a caminho”, “no forno”

There are some new laws in the works that will affect all of us.
