Hey, everybody!

Last week (semana passada), nós vimos alguns idioms (expressões) com a palavra back. Hoje vamos ver a continuação, com mais algumas phrases para vocês aprenderem. Além disso, vou incluir the lyrics (a letra) de uma música para praticar. Let’s go?

Go back a long way – people go back a ling way if they are friends or know each other for a long time (se conhecer há muito tempo)

  • The senator and my dad go back a long way. They went to college together (O senador e meu pai se conhecem há muito tempo. Eles fizeram faculdade juntos)
  • I lent him money because I trust him. We go back a long way (Eu lhe emprestei dinheiro porque confio nele. Nos conhecemos há muito tempo)

Have your back to (or against) the wall – you have your back to/against the wall when you are in a very difficult situation you need to escape from (ser pressionado, colocado contra a parede)

  • Having lost two matches, the soccer team must feel their back is against the wall (Depois de perder duas partidas, o time de futebol deve ser sentir contra a parede)
  • Last year, the company had its back against the wall and faced bankruptcy (Ano passado, a empresa esteve contra a parede ao enfrentar falência)

A pat on the back/pat [someone] on the backwhen someone pats you on the back, they praise or congratulate you (elogiar, dar um tapinha nas costas)

  • The boss gave us a pat on the back for completing the project on time (O chefe nos deu um tapinha nas costas por ter completado o projeto a tempo)
  • Lily deserves a pat on the back for learning how to ride a bike by herself (Lily merece um tapinha nas costas por ter aprendido a andar de bicicleta sozinha)

Stab [someone’s] backwhen someone stabs you in the back, they do something harmful and disloyal to you even though you trusted them (trair, apunhalhar pelas costas)

  • Instead of defending his colleague, Jay stabbed him in the back so he could get the promotion (Ao invés de defender seu colega, Jay o apunhalou pelas costas para ser promovido)
  • I thought Cam was my friend, but he stabbed me in the back gossiping about me (Achei que Cam fosse meu amigo, mas ele me traiu fofocando sobre mim)

Take a back seat – if you take a back seat during a group activity, you choose not organize or lead it (assumir um papel secundário, manter-se à margem)

  • I’ve always organized the culture festival in my town, but this year I’m taking a back seat (Eu sempre organizo o festival de cultura na minha cidade, mas esse ano vou assumir um papel secundário)
  • The director gave my wife full responsibility for the project so he could take the back seat (O diretor deu à minha esposa total responsabilidade pelo projeto para que ele pudesse assumir um papel secundário)

Turn your back on [someone or something] – when you turn your back on someone or something, you lose interest or stop helping them (dar as costas a alguém)

  • Lorelai’s father turned his back on her when she got pregnant (O pai de Lorelai deu as costas a ela quando ela engravidou)
  • When Alex became famous, she turned her back on all her family and old friends (Quando Alex ficou famosa, ela deu as costas a todos os familiares e velhos amigos)

Bend over backwards – when you bend over backwards to do something, you make a special effort to help someone (se esforçar, fazer de tudo)

  • I had to bend over backwards to help Luke with his birthday party and he didn’t even thank me (Tive que me esforçar tanto para ajudar o Luke com sua festa de aniversário e ele nem me agradeceu)
  • Phil has been bending over backwards to help his wife with her political campaign (Phil tem feito de tudo para ajudar a esposa com a campanha política dela)
