Good morning, dear readers! Já estamos em February (fevereiro) e muitas das dúvidas do ano anterior ainda não foram respondidas. Um dos meus assuntos favoritos, as Resoluções de Ano Novo, acabou fracassando, já que nenhum dos meus amigos ou alunos estavam realmente interessados em fazer planos para o futuro. Pois é, os próximos meses continuam incertos. E quando tentamos olhar para frente, muitas vezes nos perguntamos, como diria a atemporal Doris Day: where will I be? (onde estarei?)

Bem, muitos especialistas afirmam que fazer planos e pensar sobre o que está por vir ainda é importante para a nossa saúde mental, pois nos ajuda a ter perspectiva. E vamos combinar, um pouco de otimismo não faz mal a ninguém. Além disso, existe o verb tense ideal para isso: the future perfect. Então, vamos começar com a seguinte pergunta: What will you have done by the end of this year? (O que você terá feito até o final deste ano?)

Como você deve ter imaginado, o future perfect se refere a uma ação que deve ser terminada antes de um certo tempo no futuro. Então, é como se estivéssemos falando sobre o passado no futuro.

The government believes that most of the population will have vaccinated by December.

Essa frase expressa que muito provavelmente o governo já está vacinando a população e pretende finalizar antes da data mencionada. Portanto, a melhor forma de empregar o future perfect é ao pensar em uma ação que já terá sido concluída em um determinado ponto no tempo. Basicamente, ele é útil para fazer planos, previsões, expressar intenções e projetos. E ao estabelecer um período temporal, é comum usar termos como: by, by the time, by next (week, year, etc.), when, before. A estrutura é bem simples:

How about we have a look at some examples to have a better idea of how the future perfect works?:

• Linda will have left before you get there. | Linda terá ido embora antes de você chegar.

• You can’t move in to the new apartment next week because the workers won’t have finished the renovation. | Você não pode se mudar para o novo apartamento na próxima semana porque os pedreiros não terão terminado a reforma.

• We don’t have time to eat, by the time we finish our meal, our plane will have taken off. | Não temos tempo para comer, até terminarmos nossa refeição, nosso avião terá decolado.

• On Saturday, I will have lived here in France for four years. | No sábado, terei morado aqui na França por quatro anos.

• By the time we’re sixty, we’ll have already retired. | Quando tivermos sessenta anos, já teremos nos aposentado.

• My husband will have prepared breakfast before the children wake up. | Meu marido terá preparado o café da manhã antes que as crianças acordem.

• It’s been raining all day, but I’m sure it will have stopped by tomorrow. | Tem chovido o dia todo, mas tenho certeza de que terá parado amanhã.

• Will you have finished work by the time I pick you up? | Você terá terminado o trabalho quando eu te buscar?

• I called the shop and unfortunately they won’t have repaired my car by tomorrow. I’ll have to take the bus to work. | Liguei para a loja e infelizmente eles não terão reparado meu carro até amanhã. Vou ter que pegar o ônibus para o trabalho.

• Remember to take notes, otherwise will have forgotten everything by the time you get home | Lembre-se de fazer anotações, caso contrário, terá esquecido tudo quando chegar em casa.

• Sure, you can call me at work at 9am. I will have arrived at the office by 8 | Claro, você pode me ligar no trabalho às 9h. Terei chegado ao escritório às 8.

• By the time you read this I will have already left. | Quando você ler isso, eu já terei saído.

• According to the city planner, they will have built the new overpass by the end of the year. | De acordo com o urbanista, eles terão construído o novo viaduto até o final do ano.

• I’m late for class today. By the time I get there, the lesson will have already started. | Estou atrasado para a aula hoje. Quando eu chegar lá, a aula já terá começado.

• In two years, I will have graduated from college. | Em dois anos, terei me formado na faculdade.

• According to my calculations, I won’t have earned enough money in two months to buy a new computer. | De acordo com meus cálculos, não terei ganhado o suficiente em dois meses para comprar um novo computador.
