Hello, there! How’s it going?

As cores trazem várias expressões interessantes em inglês e hoje vamos ver os vários significados da cor azul (blue).

1. to be/feel blue, to have/sing the blues – estar triste, deprimido
I usually listen to happy songs when I’m blue. – Geralmente ouço canções alegres quando estou triste.

2. blue-blooded – de sangue azul, da aristocracia, nobreza
Why does she always say she’s blue-blooded? – Por que ela sempre diz que tem sangue azul?

3. blue-collar worker – trabalhador braçal
The blue-collar workers were all gathered at the union to talk about the strike. – Os trabalhadores braçais estavam todos reunidos no sindicato para falar sobre a greve.

4. blue funk – estado de depressão, tristeza
Whenever he watches the news the gets into a blue funk. – Sempre que ele assiste o noticiário ele entra num estado de depressão.

5. blue law – lei que limita atividades que são consideradas imorais por razões religiosas, tipo trabalhar de domingo ou em dia santo.
The town has so many blue laws that it’s difficult to do something on Sunday. – A cidade tem tantas blue laws que fica difícil fazer algo de domingo.

6. blue-chip – empresa ou investimento que dá muito dinheiro e é seguro para investir. O termo vem dos cassinos onde a ficha azul (blue chip) é a de maior valor.
He was doing a school paper on blue-chip companies. – Ele estava fazendo um trabalho escolar sobre empresas blue-chip.

7. blue-pencil – censurar, editar
His job at that publishing house is to blue-pencil books. – O trabalho dele naquela editora é editar/corrigir livros.

8. talk a blue streak – falar incessantemente, sem parar
That woman does talk a blue streak! – Aquela mulher fala sem parar!

9. until you are blue in the face – até cansar (mas sem resultados)
You can tell me it’s dangerous to travel alone until you’re blue in the face, but I’m going anyway. – Você pode me dizer até cansar que viajar sozinho é perigoso, mas eu vou assim mesmo.

10. once in a blue moon – muito raramente
They come to visit their grandparents once in a blue moon. – Elev vêm visitar seus avós muito raramente.

11. out of the blue – do nada
He just showed up out of the blue. – Ele apareceu assim, do nada.

12. be between the devil and the deep blue sea – estar entre a cruz e a espada
He’s betweet the devil and the deep blue sea: he needs to decide which job to take, either the most rewarding one or the best paid one. – Ele está entre a cruz e a espada: precisa decidir qual emprego aceitar, ou o mais recompensador ou o mais bem pago.
