Cén Chuma Atá ar “Uncail Sam?” Posted by róislín on Apr 15, 2010 in Uncategorized
An 15ú lá de mhí Aibreáin. Lá na gCánacha sna Stáit Aontaithe.
Every year, during tax season, one sees some íocóin Mheiriceánacha coming to life.
I recently saw two people dressed up as “Dealbh na Saoirse,” dancing outside a tax preparation office, to attract custaiméirí. Tuineacha (gúnaí) fada pléatacha uaine orthu agus ceannbhearta ar nós na Deilbhe (déanta as cúr-rubar, is dócha). Tóirsí ina lámh acu. They did have music to dance to, listening through their own “bachlóga cluaise” (ear buds). They were certainly very feiceálach (conspicuous, striking) and beomhar (lively), to boot.
At this time of year, one also sees lots of images of Uncle Sam in his culaith sheanaimseartha (old-fashioned suit) agus a hata ard (top hat). How would you describe his outfit, as Gaeilge? An féidir leat na ceisteanna seo a fhreagairt?

Maidir leis an ainm “Uncle Sam,” tá scéal suimiúil taobh thiar de sin agus cúpla míniú ag baint leis. Here are a couple of the explanations. Which one do you think is more accurate?
a) Tagann an t-ainm “Uncle Sam” ó Samuel Wilson, pacálaí feola i dTraoi, Stát Nua-Eabhrac, a sheol boscaí feola chuig na saighdiúirí Meiriceánacha a bhí ag troid i gCogadh na Bliana 1812. Stampáil sé “U.S.” ar na boscaí (le haghaidh “United States”). Dúirt na saighdiúirí, go magúil, gur tháinig an fheoil ó “Uncle Sam.”
b) Tagann an t-ainm “Uncle Sam” ó leagan Gaeilge ainm na tíre, is é sin, Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá. Deirtear gur úsáid na hÉireannaigh i Meiriceá an t-acrainm sin mar phearsantú na tíre.
Cé acu is cirte, i do bharúil (Which is more correct, in your opinion)?

Is dócha go bhfuil (a) ceart, ach tá (b) i bhfad níos suimiúla mar mhíniú…;-)
