(le Róislín)
The previous blog listed some occupations from “a” to “i.” Now we’ll continue with “j” to “v.” As one might suspect, there are few (if any) occupational terms in Irish that begin with, or even contain, q, w, x, y, or z. Curiously, though, there are at least a few for “j,” a letter which has very little role in the Irish language.
Hmmm, in fact, sometime maybe I should do a blog on Irish words that do start with j, k, q, v, w, x, y, z. These are the eight letters that traditionally were not part of the Irish alphabet. Of them, “v” is now used in a sizable number of words (from “vacsaín” to “Vulgáid”), almost all of which are direct borrowings from English or other language. The rest range from having a handful to maybe a hundred or so words. It’s an interesting assortment, largely scientific, but with a few others thrown in like karaté, vodca, or yóyó. Ábhar blag eile!

hmm…is there no word in Irish for cellist, then, or is it the same as violinist? I might call it fidil mor…. the insturment, that is, but what about those who play it?
