Favourite Italian Pastimes Posted by on Feb 25, 2014 in Culture

Quali sono i passatempi preferiti degli Italiani? What are the Italians’ favourite pastimes? Well, out of curiosity I’ve been doing a bit of research on the net and reading articles published by FITeL (Federazione Italiana Tempo Libero), Istat (Istituto Nazionale di Statistica), and Consumatore News. Here are a few excerpts taken from various publications dealing with cultural trends that illustrate how the Italians like to spend their tempo libero (free time).

Changing lifestyles

Over the years, changing lifestyles and habits have certainly also changed our way of passing our free time, as well as the amount of free time that we actually have. These days, do we still have any free time left to dedicate to hobbies, interests, friends or passions amongst all our many daily commitments?

When free time becomes work!

Whereas free time once meant the hours free from work during which one mainly relaxed, these days organising evenings with friends and planning the weekend has become an actual job.

… and our favourite pastime is …

mangiare-bene-a-Trastevere

Going to the restaurant is, for many people, one of their favourite ways of spending time with family and friends. Eating together is a pastime that involves pleasure, self fulfilment, experimentation and cultural growth (e.g. ethnic restaurants), and fulfils the need for company in an age of stress and solitude.

… followed by …

… those who love to go to the gym and fitness centres. This is an obligatory commitment for those who, despite being tired out when they finish work, need to burn off a few of the extra kilos accumulated at the restaurant and tone up their muscles with a few hours of physical exercise.

… and when we’re not eating out or working out …

… there are lots of other ways to spend your free time apart from going to the restaurant and the gym: many people prefer to go to the cinema or dedicate themselves to cultural activities, such as the theatre, or reading. Or in an increasingly technological age, even sitting at the computer chatting or spending time on social networks is, for some people, becoming a way of spending their free time. Many people, on the other hand, see their free time as  an opportunity to be lazy and do nothing in particular, so they spend it in front of the TV or listening to music.

Allora, quali sono i tuoi passatempi preferiti? So, what are your favourite pastimes?

Ciao e grazie Geoff e Serena!

    • Geoff:

@Lee Ciao Lee, siamo molto contenti che trovi il nostro umile blog così utile.

P.S. The last sentence in your comment is problematical because the English expression ‘to look forward to’ is very difficult to translate into Italian. Perhaps the best construction would be ‘ogni giorno, non vedo l’ora di leggerlo!’

Saluti da Geoff e Serena 🙂
