Here are the solutions to our History In A Map quiz. Well done everyone who had a go. Now let’s see how many you got right?

Every Italian town map is a little history lesson. In this segment of Pontremoli, for example, we can find: Via Roma, Piazza Unità d’Italia, Via Guglielmo Marconi, Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, and Via IV Novembre. © OpenStreetMap contributors.

10. Clue: the name of this piazza commemorates the liberation of the Italian peninsula from Nazi-Fascism = Piazza Della Liberazione

11. Clue: he’s considered the father of the Italian language = Via Dante

12. Clue: on this date in 1870 the Bersaglieri broke through the walls of Rome near Porta Pia = Via XX Settembre*

13. Clue: on the 2nd of June 1946 Italy changed its constitution and ceased being a monarchy = Piazza Della Repubblica

14. Clue: he was the first king of the newly unified Italian State = Viale Vittorio Emanuele

15. Clue: important French leader born in Corsica and imprisoned for a short while on the Isola d’Elba from which he escaped in 1815 = Piazza Napoleone

16. Clue: famous Sicilian writer from Agrigento, he won the Nobel Prize in 1934 = Via Pirandello

17. Clue: Italy is part of it = Viale Europa

18. Clue: every morning butchers go to this piazza to buy their goods = Piazza Dei Macelli

19. Clue: the 19th century movement for the liberation and unification of Italy = Piazza Risorgimento

*N.B. When names of streets, squares and so on include a date, it is always written in Roman numerals.
