Mimì La Gatta – La Mia Storia – Part 4 Posted by on Feb 17, 2011 in Italian Language

Three days and nights have gone by. The passing of time has a calming rhythm. The birds awaken with the dawn and immediately begin their songs of welcome to the sun. I hear the dragging of hooves as the cows leave the stable to return to their pastures. They move in slow motion, why hurry when there’s the whole day ahead?

Later, when the sun climbs over the brow of the hill to caress once again the fields of the valley where the barn lies, I see fingers of light begin to explore our shelter, creeping in through the cracks and the dusty panes adorned with spider webs. It’s as if he needs to penetrate all the dark places and announce: "I’m here, another day has begun"

The fingers of light, thin and pale, caress me, reassure me, in the same way as the warm humid presence of the cows at night. But neither the cows, nor the sun give me what I need in this moment. I’m hungry! Three days and nights without food is a long time when you have to give milk to a kitten.

It will be difficult to find food. I can’t go hunting with the little one, and I’m very reluctant to leave him on his own. I decide to wait until night time when the cows return. I know that the cows are glad to have me here because since I arrived all the rats that used to bother them have disappeared.

Even though cats and cows don’t speak the same language we understand one another. There is an old animal dialect that comes in handy in these situations. I ask the cows for help and they reply: "Don’t worry signora cat, we’ll keep an eye on your kitten while you’re away. And so, giving a final reassuring lick to my little one’s face, I leave the safety of the barn and set off into the night. paw-print-catpaw-print-catpaw-print-catpaw-print-cat

  1. James Lupori:

What wonderful little pieces!!!Serena, this blog is truly wonderful. My Italian is just good enough that these little stories are easy to read. You raised not only my consciousness but my confidence!!! Thanks.

    • Serena:

      A presto, Serena

  2. Yvonne:

Oh, good, the next episode. It is such a good story, and it is useful to try to read the Italian, then be able to check your progress.

Thank you so much. Will we ever see a photo of our brave heroine? Does she know she has a fan club?

    • Serena:

@Yvonne To all fans of Mimì La gatta,

We are working on setting up a new blog site dedicated to Mimì’s stories. We should be ready to publicize it within the next week. As well as gathering together all of Mimì’s stories in one place each chapter will highlight two or three key words, expressions or phrases and link them to relevant Transparent Italian Language blogs in order to give more context to certain aspects of the Italian language and culture.

      Rimanete sintonizzati, Serena e Geoff

    Salve Serena, Salve Geoff
E’ una vera poesia nella prosa. Che piacere provo leggendola!

  4. Jeannet:

    Mimi,

Meanwhile ‘Mimi la gatta’ is wandering in the night, in search of food, I am ‘eating’ il testo “;o) come le mucche!

    cosa Mimi trovarsi?
    a rivedersi bene!
    nella casa.

  5. Jeannet:

    Ciao “Mimi”,

    lo no so.

    Grazie.

    • Serena:

@Jeannet Ciao Jeannet, I’m not sure exactly what it is that you don’t understand but the line ‘lascio la sicurezza del fienile’ literally means ‘I leave the safety of the barn’.

      Saluti da Serena

  7. Jeannet:

    Ciao Serena,

I don’t know the english word for’fienile’, said to be ‘barn’, wheras I thought about
‘la sicurezza del fienile’ which is the PLACE of’la sicurezza’, not the barn (?)-leaving the barn.

    Saluti da Jeannet

  8. William Auge:

    Salve Serena,

    tanti auguri, William

  9. Allan Mahnke:

    Tante grazie! È molto divertente!
