MITO International Music Festival in Milan and Torino Posted by on Sep 17, 2021 in Culture

Ciao a tutti!

It is already mid-September, which I find sbalorditivo (bewildering). I wanted to share a festival I wish I could be at in Milano/Torino now, and that is the MITO International Music Festival, or MITO SettembreMusica.

The festival runs during the month of September, this year from Sept 9 – Sept 26, and is a cultural collaboration between the cities of Milan and Turin that host a series of classical concerts. Performances range in size from grand assemblies in churches and concert halls to smaller ensembles in the cities’ piazzas. You’ll find nightly programs in each city which feature works from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and more.

From the site:

“MITO SettembreMusica is back, brimming with music, musicians and ideas. Once again, the cities of Milano and Torino team up to showcase a wealth of grand cultural heritage, which at last we can share and enjoy after so much travail. In the wake of last year’s festival, which the pandemic failed to put the brakes on as we turned our focus to artists and performers hailing exclusively from that great classical music hub known as Italy, this year MITO returns as a standard bearer on the international scene, the true hallmark of this one-of-a-kind music festival.

The involvement of talent from all over Europe reflects the kind of global flavor and outlook – which we were forced to forsake last year – that a cultural event of such proportions symbolizes and strives for, now more than ever.”

This years theme is “futuri” (futures):

In molti casi addirittura cancellato in modo drammatico.

“The pandemic forced us to focus on the present. Because for six months our future was mortgaged, interrupted. In many cases, even erased dramatically. All we could do was live for the day, amid uncertainty, hesitating every time we set about making plans, scheduling appointments, and moving along once well-defined pathways. Among others who came to the rescue were the artists. And among them, musicians in particular.

Classical music, by nature, brings together legacies of the past and the quintessence of the present, as it bequeaths them to the future.

Sure, open wounds remain, the toll taken by the pandemic. But we’ve begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that’s where an event like MITO SettembreMusica comes in – to help take us there, to guide us toward tomorrow. With faith and hope.”
