Ottobre – A Poem Posted by on Oct 21, 2016 in Uncategorized

Every season has its own beauty. Autumn brings exhilarating colours, the smell of must and wine, and the miracle of the sun ‘that can’t bid us farewell, returning every morning like a new miracle’.

These are the thoughts expressed by the poet Vincenzo Cardarelli (1887-1960) in his poem Ottobre, which he wrote in the autumn of his own life.

Ottobre di Vincenzo Cardarelli

Un tempo, era d’estate,
era a quel fuoco, a quegli ardori,
che si destava la mia fantasia.
Inclino adesso all’autunno
dal colore che inebria,
amo la stanca stagione
che ha già vendemmiato.
Niente più mi somiglia,
nulla più mi consola,
di quest’aria che odora
di mosto e di vino,
di questo vecchio sole ottobrino
che splende sulle vigne saccheggiate.

October by Vincenzo Cardarelli

Once upon a time, it was the summer,
that fire, those passions,
that awoke my fantasy.
Now I lean towards the autumn
with its exhilarating colour,
I love the tired season
with the grapes already gathered.
Nothing is more like me,
nothing consoles me more,
than this air that smells
of must and wine,
than this old October sun
that shines upon the looted vines.

Sole d’autunno inatteso,
che splendi come in un di là,
con tenera perdizione
e vagabonda felicità,
tu ci trovi fiaccati,
vòlti al peggio e la morte nell’anima.
Ecco perché ci piaci,
vago sole superstite
che non sai dirci addio,
tornando ogni mattina
come un nuovo miracolo,
tanto più bello quanto più t’inoltri
e sei lì per spirare.
E di queste incredibili giornate
vai componendo la tua stagione
ch’è tutta una dolcissima agonia.

Unexpected autumn sun,
that shines as if from the beyond,
with tender perdition
and vagrant happiness,
you find us exhausted,
turned towards the worst and with death in our souls.
That’s why we like you,
vague survivor sun
that can’t bid us farewell,
returning every morning
like a new miracle,
ever more beautiful as you go on
and near your end.
And with these incredible days
you compose your season
which is one sweet agony.

  1. Rita Kostopoulos:

    Bellisima poesia,

    • Serena:

    • Serena:

@Karen Salve Karen, l’autunno bellissimo perché cambia di giorno in giorno, almeno qui da noi dove siamo circondati da boschi decidui. Ma quando piove …
      Saluti da Serena
