In last week’s blog, we looked at some vocabulary that’s useful for finding your way around in Italy. Here’s a quiz based on interpreting the replies that you may get to your inquiries.
In this scenario, you’ve just arrived by rental car in the little country town of Pontremoli, Lunigiana. You need to find accommodation and something to eat, so you follow signs to the ufficio turistico (tourist office) where you hope to garner some useful information.
Translate the Italian replies below.

Question: Scusi, c’è un Bed and Breakfast vicino al centro?
Translation: Excuse me, is there a bed and breakfast near the town centre?

Il castello di Pontremoli si trova nella parte più alta della città. La vecchia strada medievale non è transitabile dalle macchine ed è difficile per persone con mobilità limitata. Un paio di anni fa hanno costruito un ascensore che da Porta Parma sale su fino ad un piazzale vicino al castello.

Yes, here, there is the Azzurro B&B on via Cairoli, just at the entrance of Pontremoli. Here is a map of the city.
There are many in the town center, but if you want to taste the Amors, the typical deserts of Pontremoli, you must go to the Caffè degli Svizzeri, in Piazza della Republica, in Pontremoli’s town center.
The easiest way to go to the Cinque Terre is by train. There is a train that leaves from Pontremoli at 9:05 and arrives in Monterosso at 10:17.
From the B&B, go left, cross the bridge with the statues and then turn right. Continue straight down this street, Via dei Mille and after 500 meters on the left at the top is the station.
Certainly, it’s in the back, on the left.
There’s the Trattoria da Mariano, in Piazza del Duomo, next to the church.
No, it’s nearby…if you want you can take the elevator: stay straight on via Garibaldi, as soon as you exit from the Porta Parma on the left, there is a tunnel that leads to the Castle’s elevator.
