Happy Birthday Wish for Your Boss~

 

Hi everyone. Today was my boss’s birthday, so everyone in my group wished her happy birthday. Most of you might already know that Happy Birthday is ‘O tan jo-bi omedetou!(おたんじょうび　おめでとう！　お誕生日　おめでとう). It’s a bit long, but not too bad for memorizing it.

So, how would this change if we want to wish our boss a Happy Birthday? As you all know, in Japanese, we have Keigo, the form of Japanese expression to show our respect towards someone who is in higher social status. Typical examples are, teachers, your own or family’s Dr,  your boss at work, etc. So, in English, you might say “Happy Birthday” to everyone in the same way, but in Japanese, expression changes a bit, it becomes a bit more formal, such as,

Otan jo-bi Onedetou gozaimasu

お誕生日　おめでとうございます

おたんじょうび　おめでとうございます

By adding, “gozaimasu”, it becomes formal.
