8 Japanese Onomatopoeic Words Posted by ranita on Dec 16, 2016 in Grammar
Onomatopoeia refers to the usage of words that describe sounds associated with an action or a thing. There are mainly three types of onomatopoeic words in Japanese – Giongo 擬音語, Giseigo 擬声語 and Gitaigo 擬態語.
Giongo 擬音語 are onomatopoeic words that represent sounds produced by non-living objects. For example, ザーザー zaazaa is the sound of heavy rainfall and びりびり biribiri is the sound produced when something is being torn.
Giseigo 擬声語 are onomatopoeic words that represent sounds produced by living objects. For example コケコッコ― kokekkoko is the sound made by roosters and コホコホ kohokoho is the sound of coughing.
Gitaigo 擬態語 are phenomimes that represent the state of mind or external conditions. For example, どんどん dondon denotes steadiness and はっきり hakkiri denotes clarity.
