Basic Japanese Lesson – Mo Particle Posted by keiko on Aug 7, 2014 in Grammar
During the month of August, I would like to focus on the grammar aspect of Japanese language. I will start covering from the basic particles in each article. In this article, I will introduce you to, Mo(も) Particle.
This particle is similar to “too” or “also” in English. When the same exact state or action applies to another item, similar to the first item, the latter item is marked with the Mo(も) particle in Japanese.
Let me explain this in the examples below:
Mr. Thomas is a doctor. Mrs. Thomas is also a doctor.
==>トーマスさんは、医者です。トーマス夫人 も 医者です。
Thomas san wa isha desu. Thomas fujin mo isha desu.

I work at the bank. My older brother also works at the bank.
==>私は、その銀行で働いています。私の兄 も その銀行で働いています。
Watashi wa sono ginkou de hataraite imasu. Watashino ani mo sono ginkou de hataraite imasu.

I am Italian. My friend, Nancy is also Italian.
==>私は、イタリア人です。友達のナンシー も イタリア人です。
Watashi wa Itaria jin desu. Tomodahi no Nancy mo Itaria jin desu.

When asking if another person or item is also similar to the first person or item, you will simply add Mo(も) right after the subject. See the examples below:
This toy is made in Japan. Is that toy also made in Japan?
==> このおもちゃは、日本製です。あのおもちゃ も 日本製 ですか?
Kono omocha wa nihonsei desu. Ano omocha mo nihonsei desu ka?

I am a teacher. Are you also a teacher?
==> 私は、教師です。あなた も 教師ですか?
Watashi wa kyoshi desu. Anata mo kyoshi desuka?

When the second person/item is not the same as the first person/item, you will not be using the particle, Mo(も). Instead, you would use the particle, WA(は). (Note: は is pronounced as “wa” not “ha” when it is put right after the subject.)

Mr. Smith is American. Mr. Robinson is French.
==> スミスさんは、アメリカ人です。ロビンソンさん は、フランス人です。
Sumisu san wa america jin desu. Robinson san wa fransu jin desu.

This snack is sweet. That sweet is bitter.
==>このおかしは、甘いです。あのおかし は 苦いです。
Kono okashi wa amai desu. Ano okashi wa nigai desu.
