How to express your feelings in Japanese…. Posted by on Feb 27, 2014 in Grammar

Everybody has feelings…  you could be happy, angry, sad, and stressed out.. etc..  In this article, I would like to cover some of the expressions you can use when you are “not happy”…  How would you express your feelings when you feel sad or angry in Japanese? Well, read on..!

 

 

1. I don’t feel like doing something….

きょうは、おきるきがしない。(今日は、起きる気がしない。)

Kyouwa,okirukiga shinai.   – I don’t feel like getting up today.

いまは、ほんをよむきがしない。(今は、本を読む気がしない。)

Imawa,honwoyomukiga shinai. -I don’t feel like reading a book right now.

2. I am upset..I am tired of ~…..

かれには、いまはらがたっている。(彼には、今、腹が立っている)

Kareniwa ima haraga tatteiru. -I am upset at him right now.

きみの しつれいなたいどには、うんざりだよ。(君の失礼な態度にはうんざりだよ。)

Kimino shitsureina taidoniwa unzari dayo.- I am tired of your disrespectful behavior.

 3. I am not in a mood to ~.

いまは、はなすきがしない。(今は、話す気がしない。)

Imawa hanasukiga shinai. -I am not in a mood to talk right now.

いまは、あそぶきがしない。(今は、遊ぶ気がしない。)

Imawa asobukiga shinai. – I am not in a mood to play right now.

4. Leave me alone…

ぼく(わたし)のことは、いまはほっといて。(僕(私)のことは今はほっといて。)

*Boku(watashi)nokotowa imawa hottoite! – Leave me alone right now!

*Note= “Boku” is often used by men. & “watashi” is often used by women when expressing about self.

 

5. I am angry.

そんなにおこらないで。(そんなに、怒らないで。)

Sonnani okoranaide. – Don’t get so angry.

はらがたってしょうがない!(腹が立ってしょうがない!)

Haraga tatte shouganai! – I can’t help it. I am so angry!

6. I don’t like ~ .. I hate ~. 

このいろはきにいらない。(この色は気に入らない。)

Kono irowa kiniiranai.-I don’t like this color.

むしはだいきらいです。(虫は、大嫌いです。)

Mushiwa daikirai desu.- I hate bugs.

このくるまは、あまりすきじゃない。(この車はあまり好きじゃない。)

Konokurumawa amari sukijanai. – I don’t like this car too much.

 7. I can’t stand ~.

あのそうおんには、がまんできない。(あの騒音には我慢できない。)

Ano souon niwa gaman dekinai.- I can’t stand the noise.

 

8. I am stressed out…

いそがしくてストレスがたっまている。(忙しくてストレスが溜まっている。)

Isogashikute sutoresu ga tamatte iru. -I am so busy. I am stressed out.

Hope you learned new Japanese expressions today.  Try these expressions next time when you are feeling upset…  I have to tell you that typically, Japanese people are not so good about expressing their feelings despite the fact that we have so many vocabularies to express our feelings.  I believe it is a cultural thing where people in Japan typically try to hold their feelings in to avoid confrontation.
