The 2nd article on simple Japanese conversational exercise is about ” Where are you going?”. How would you respond when someone asks you, “Where are you going?(Dokoe ikimasuka?,　どこへ　行きますか？ Dokoe ikunodesuka? どこへ、行くのですか？)  Let me show you how you can respond to this question. Read on!

Where are you going today? – Kyo dokoe ikimasuka?, Kyo dokoe ikunodesuka?

(今日　どこへ　行きますか？今日　どこへ、行くのですか？)

==> I am going to school today. – Kyowa gakkou e ikimasu.

(今日は、学校へ行きます。きょうは、　がっこうへ　いきます。）

==>I am going shopping this afternoon. – Kyono gogo shopping e ikimasu.

(今日の午後、ショッピングへ行きます。きょうのごご、ショッピングへ　いきます。)

==> I am going to work today. – Kyouwa shigoto ni ikimasu.

(今日は、仕事に行きます。きょうは、しごとに　いきます。)

 

As you can see above,, ”Ikimasu- 行きます（いきます）” in Japanese is ” I am going~”.

Try the following words to make the similar sentences:

1) Ginko (銀行、ぎんこう、bank)

2) Concert (コンサート、concert)

3) Toshokan (図書館、としょかん、library)

4) Su-pa- (スーパー、grocery store, supermarket)

5) Kouen (公園、こうえん、park)

 

Were you able to make sentences like:

1) Ginko e ikimasu. 銀行へ　行きます。ぎんこうへ　いきます。

2) Concert e ikimasu.　コンサートへ行きます。コンサートへ　いきます。

3) Toshokan e ikimasu.　図書館へ行きます。としょかんへ　いきます。

4) Su-pa- e ikimasu.　スーパーへ行きます。スーパーへ　いきます。

5) Kouen e ikimasu.　公園へ行きます。こうえんへ　いきます。

 

What if you want to speficy “what time” you are going to a certain place. You can add “~ji ni (~時に)” right before “ikimasu(行きます)”.

For example:

You can say:

I am going to work at 9 am this morning. – Kesa kuji ni shigoto e ikimasu.

(今朝　九時に　仕事へ　行きます。けさ　くじに　しごとへ　いきます。)

I am going shopping at 10 am. – juji ni shopping e ikimasu.

(十時にショッピングへ　行きます。じゅうじに　ショッピングへ　いきます。)

one o’clock – ichi ji, 一時、いちじ

two o’clock – ni ji、二時、にじ

three o’clock – san ji、三時、さんじ

four o’clock – yo ji、四時、よじ

five o’clock – go ji、五時、ごじ

six o’clock – roku ji、六時、ろくじ

seven o’clock – hichi ji、七時、しちじ

eight o’clock-hachi ji、八時、はちじ

nine o’clock – ku ji、九時、くじ

ten o’clock – jyu ji、十時、じゅうじ

eleven o’clock – jyu-ichi ji、十一時、じゅういちじ

twelve o’clock – jyu-ni ji、十二時、じゅうにじ

In addition, in Japanese, AM and PM are:

AM – Gozen, 午前、ごぜん

PM – Gogo、午後、ごご
