ㅂ Ending Verbs and Adjectives Posted by Ginny on Dec 13, 2009 in Grammar
In the standard polite form, ㅂ ending verbs like 밉다 (to hate) will turn to 미워요 in the standard polite form. To form the conjugated form of ㅂ ending verbs, drop the ㅂ and add 워요. In the standard polite past form, it’ll be 미웠어요. To form the standard polite past form, drop the ㅂ in 밉다 and add 웠어요. 돕다 (to help) is another ㅂ ending verb. In the standard polite form it’ll be 도와요. In the standard polite past form it will be 도왔어요. Notice that 밉다 has a 워요/웠어요 ending while 돕다 has a 와요/왔어요 ending. This is because the vowel in 돕다 is an 아 vowel, while the vowel in 밉다 is an 이 vowel.
In the deferential polite form, 밉다 will be 밉습니다 in the form of a statement, but 밉습니까 is in the form of a question. The same will happpen for 돕다. It will be 돕습니다 in the form of a statement and 돕습니까 in the form of a question. To form the deferential polite form, drop the 다 in 밉다 and 돕다. Then add 습니다 to the stem of the verb, which in this case is 밉 and 돕. In the interrogative form, drop the 다 and add 습니까 to the stem of the verb. In the deferential polite past tense, it’ll be 미웠습니다 and 도왔습니다. Drop the 다 in 밉다 and 돕다, and add 웠습니다 or 왔습니다 depending on the verb.
There are a lot of ㅂ ending adjectives. For example, 춥다 (to be cold) and 덥다 (to be hot) will be conjugated in the same way as the ㅂ ending verbs. In the standard polite form, it’ll be 추워요 and 더워요. In the standard polite past tense, it’ll be 추웠어요 and 더웠어요. In the deferential polite form it’ll be 춥습니다 and 덥습니다. In the deferential polite past tense it’ll be 추웠습니다 and 더웠습니다. Just to make clear, 덥다 (to be hot) and 돕다 (to help) are two different words in the category of ㅂ ending words. So now that you know how the ㅂ ending words are conjugated, how would you conjugate 쉽다 (to be easy) and 어렵다 (to be hard)?
In the standard polite form 쉽다 will be 쉬워요 and 어렵다 will be 어려워요. In the standard polite past form it’ll be 쉬웠어요 and 어려웠어요. In the deferential polite form it’ll be 쉽습니다 and 어렵습니다. In the deferential polite past form it’ll be 쉬웠습니다 and 어려웠습니다. Now there are a handful of ㅂ ending words that do not follow this conjugation pattern. Words like 입다 (to wear) and 넓다 (to be wide) will be conjugated as 입어요 and 넓어요 in the standard polite form and 입었어요 and 넓었어요 in the past tense. In the deferential polite it’ll be 입습니다 and 넓습니다 and in the past tense it’ll be 입었습니다 and 넓었습니다.
