Frequency Adverbs in Korean Posted by Kyung-Hwa on Mar 28, 2018 in Grammar, Korean Language, Vocabulary
Is there something that you do on a daily basis or every week? Do you know how to describe how often you do something in Korean? This post is about frequency adverbs in Korean that explains how often something happens.
Just like the English language, the Korean language also has many different types of adverbs: adverbs of frequency, adverbs of degree, adverbs of time and place, etc.
Adverbs are used to modify a adjective, verb, or another adverb in the sentence. They are used to answer questions such as ‘how often’, ‘where’, and ‘when’.
This post will focus on the frequency adverbs (빈도부사 [bin-do-boo-sa]), and the following are examples of commonly used adverbs of frequency in Korean.
Once you learn these frequency adverbs in Korean, you can try to incorporate them to describe your daily or weekly routine as follows:
- 저는 한국어를 항상 공부해요. (I always study Korean.)
- 저는 집에서 주로 운동해요. (I usually exercise at home.)
- 저는 커피를 자주 마셔요. (I often drink coffee.)
- 저는 책을 가끔 읽어요. (I sometimes read book.)
- 저는 백화점에 드물게 가요. (I seldom go to a department store.)
- 저는 군거질을 절대 안 해요. (I never eat junk food.)
* 절대 is used in a negative sentence.
In general, the placement of these frequency adverbs is fairly free in Korean sentences.
Therefore, you can place adverbs in other positions as follows:
- 저는 항상 한국어를 공부해요. (I always study Korean.)
- 저는 주로 집에서 운동해요. (I usually exercise at home.)
- 저는 자주 커피를 마셔요. (I often drink coffee.)
- 저는 가끔 책을 읽어요. (I sometimes read book.)
- 저는 드물게 백화점에 가요. (I seldom go to a department store.)
- 저는 절대 군거질을 안 해요. (I never eat junk food.)
In a conversation, a speaker uses adverbs to provide detailed information to the listener. I hope this post will help you to increase your fluency in Korean.
