nyttår lingo på norsk Posted by on Jan 3, 2010 in Culture, Holidays

New Year’s lingo in Norwegian.  I did a little bit of research about the most popular new year’s resolutions throughout the world.  Every culture, when ringing in et nytt år, is full of people who want to better their lives in some way or another.  Since ancient times, humans have associated et nytt år with a fresh start, a natural motivator to do something to make themselves feel improved.  If you find yourself in Norway around New Year’s, you will surely be able to follow en samtale (a conversation) about new year’s resolutions.

-å bli i fin form\trene-to get in good shape\train-this is usually den mest populære (the most popular).  Folk vil spise bedre og bli mer aktiv sånn at de føler seg bedre, både mentalsk og fysisk (People want to eat better and be more active so that they feel better, both mentally and physically).

å slutte å røyke eller drikke alkohol (to quit smoking or drinking alcohol)-this is surely a popular resolution for people, and certainly en av de vanskeligste å holde oppe (one of the most difficult to keep up) due to fysisk avhengighet (physical addiction).

å spare penger\betale gjeld-to save money and pay debt-et nytt år is always a good time to be thinking about ways to være forsiktigere med penger (be more careful with money).  Kanskje man kutter ut noe helt eller skaper et budsjett (Maybe one cuts something out completely or creates a budget).

å finne en kjæreste-to find a boyfriend or girlfriend-this is often the time when a single person thinks the most about trying to find a mate.  Right after the holidays and being at parties with couples can certainly be a motivator for single folks to get out there and treffe nye folk (meet new people).

å lære noe nytt-to learn something new-et nytt år is can often invigorate a desire to take up a new hobby, whether it be å sy (to sew), å lage mat (to cook or make food), å lære et nytt språk (to learn a new language), å lære et instrument (to learn an instrument) eller melde seg inn i et sportslag (or join a sports team).

-å finne en ny jobb-to find a new job-I would be willing to bet that the majority of people think about changing jobs around nyttåret.  Perhaps they think they should have en høyere lønn (a higher salary), liker ikke sjefen (don’t like the boss), or er lei av jobben (sick of the job).

There are of course many, many more new year’s resolutions that people promise themselves hvert år (every year), but those seem to be de meste vanlige (the most common).

Lykke til!  Good luck!
