What are your 5 favorite Polish dishes? Posted by Kasia on Aug 31, 2020 in Culture
I know that most of you have more, but if you would have to choose 5 absolute favorite dishes from Poland, what would they be?
I have no problem sharing mine with you!
Number one would be definitely pierogi z kapustą i grzybami (pierogi with sauerkraut and mushrooms)!!!
I love all different types of pierogi (remember – there is no “s” at the end – pierogi is plural), but these savory ones have always been my favorite. They are easy to make, and very popular around Christmas season. Although I love them any time of the year! And of course I love to put sautéed onions and bacon on top while serving them.
My second favorite would be Gołąbki! My family absolutely loves this dish! And I make it quite often:)
This video is pretty long, but it really explains everything very well and it also shows my favorite way to cook this dish: I prefer making it in a cast iron pot with liquid in it!
Lets choose number 3…and it would have to be Kopytka! Have you heard about these? They are Polish potato dumplings (great to make if you have leftover mashed potatoes). They are cooked in the water and can be served right after, but they are the best heated up on the pan after they are cooked – perfect and crispy! Often served with sautéed onions, fresh herbs or sour-cream on the top. Yum!!!

Number 4 on the list…Naleśniki! They are Polish version of crepes [just better than French:) – I don’y have a proof, but I definitely think French stole this recipe from us🤣].
They are perfect for breakfast, snack, dessert, dinner…My favorite ones are made with sweet cheese (farmers cheese mixed with eggs and sugar), crisped up on a frying pen and served with sour cream and sugar on the top! I also love them with fresh fruit or any type of jam!
And finally number 5 goes to…I know that a lot of you will not agree with me on this one, but I absolutely miss this dish…It is Flaki! Polish tripe soup!
There is just something so special about this soup…delicious, spicy and I bet if you would not know what’s in it, you would love it after tasting it!
But if you would like to know what’s in it and how to make it, check out this video:
