African animals – Afrykańskie zwierzęta Posted by on Jul 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

Africa is a unique land of varied traditions (tradycje), culture (kultura), people (ludzie), languages (języki) and geography (geografia). It is the second largest (drugi największy) continent of the world. It is also the second most populous (najbardziej zaludniony) continent after Asia. The Mediterranean sea surrounds Africa to the North, the Red Sea (Morze Czerwone) and Suez canal (kanał Sueski) to the Northeast, the Southwest surrounded by the Indian Ocean (Ocean Indyjski) and the West bordering the Atlantic Ocean (Ocean Atlantycki). The equator passes through Africa making it the only continent that stretches from the northern temperate to the southern temperate zones. This has created an arid or desert region in the northern half and the central and southern half covered with the plains of savanna and a dense rainforest jungle region.

This geographical diversity has resulted in a vast and varied population of African animals. The vast plains (rozległe równiny) of Africa and the dense jungle is the home to a wide population of animals, that roam freely on the African land. The vast reserves, sanctuaries and protected areas have resulted in a decrease in poaching and hunting of the wild animals (dzikie zwierzęta). Although, the illegal killings have not stopped completely, there is a significant decrease in the poaching. The National Geographic has helped introduce the world with the harsh and difficult, yet interesting and intriguing life of the African fauna. African safari has become a dream holiday of every traveler. A look at the king of the jungle hunting down his prey, the Great Wildebeest Migration, a herd of elephants lead by the matriarch cow, has become the standard picture in the minds of people who think about Africa and the African safari. The Serengeti, Sahara, Kilimanjaro are synonyms to Africa and the African animal list.

We have all mostly seen wild animals as zoo animals or in television documentaries, but almost never in their natural habitat. Africa has been blessed with a variety of beautiful animal species such as the carnivores, herbivores, snakes, primates, aquatic animals like crocodiles and amphibians, etc.

My name is Kasia Scontsas. I grew near Lublin, Poland and moved to Warsaw to study International Business. I have passion for languages: any languages! Currently I live in New Hampshire. I enjoy skiing, kayaking, biking and paddle boarding. My husband speaks a little Polish, but our daughters are fluent in it! I wanted to make sure that they can communicate with their Polish relatives in our native language. Teaching them Polish since they were born was the best thing I could have given them! I have been writing about learning Polish language and culture for Transparent Language’s Polish Blog since 2010.

Its interesting that you post about African wildlife on a Polish blog, because in a sense, that has been my life or the past 6 months!
I am a student of Environmental Planning and Management in Kenya. Last year, i visited Poland for about 2 weeks and was really impressed by the warmth and hospitality of the Polish people that i decided i would come back for a longer stay.
I decided to find an internship with environmental organizations in Poland, and i ended up in Torun in mid-February.The ecological association that hosts me here, runs a forest school: Szkola Lesna na Barbarce. We receive groups of school children every week from around the Kujawsko-Pomorskie province and the staff here prepare ecological lessons in the outdoors.
On many occassions, i have had to speak about the wildlife in Kenya and East Africa, where the famous Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystems and the highest peaks in Africa,Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, are found.
It has been an interesting experience, showing pictures on power point slides of African wildlife to Polish children and answering many many questions as you can imagine.
I’m delighted that today African wildlife has featured on your blog!
