Foldable roof in National Stadium in Warsaw Posted by on Nov 3, 2011 in Culture, Current News

As Poland is getting ready for the Euro 2012 football tournament, the National Stadium in Warsaw is rumoured to be one of the most expensive structures of its kind in the world.

The new stadium’s roof is pretty impressive. Officially unveiled to the public a few weeks ago, the roof sits ‘folded’ in a nest above the centre of the pitch. When needed, it unfolds in about 15 minutes, pulled by long wires powered by 72 engines.

The National Stadium is the most important Polish State investment in connection with the Finals Tournament of UEFA EURO 2012. It is being constructed by Narodowe Centrum Sportu (the National Sports Centre) and constitutes a PLN 2 billion State investment located in the centre of Warsaw, by the Vistula. Five matches of the Tournament will be played there: three in the group stage, including the opening match following the opening ceremony, a quarter-final, and a semi-final.

Did you mean 2 million PLN or 2 billion PLN? 2 billion PLN would mean a $650 million dollar stadium, excessive even by western prices.
