My Family – Moja Rodzina Posted by Kasia on Sep 13, 2010 in Vocabulary
My name is Kasia and I was born in Poland (urodziłam się w Polsce). I grew up (dorastałam) in a little village near Lublin in the South East of Poland (w Polsce południowo – wschodniej).
Currently (obecnie) I live in New Hampshire and that is why I do not see my family too often. My parents live in a single family house (dom jednorodzinny) on a big fruit farm. Both my mother (moja mama) and my father (mój tata) work on the farm. My mom is a very active person (bardzo aktywna osoba) and always full of energy (pełna energii). The dull routine (nudna rutyna) of everyday life (życie codzienne) does not suit her at all. She likes to lead a hectic life (prowadzić intensywny tryb życia) and she is always on the go. She takes very good care of my family (troszczy się o rodzinę) and is a wonderful cook (wspaniała kucharka). My father on the other hand is a very quiet person (cicha osoba). He is good tempered (spokojny, łagodny) and patient (cierpliwy) and I know that I can always rely on him (polegać na nim).
My older brother (starszy brat) is married (żonaty [female – zamężna]) and has a 9 months old daughter (córkę). My sister – in – law (bratowa) does not work (nie pracuje) but stays at home and looks after her daughter (opiekuje się swoją córką).
My younger brother (młodszy brat) lives with his wife in Warsaw. They have a very nice apartment (mieszkanie) downtown and they both love crazy life in the capital (kochają szalone życie w stolicy). I havea very strong bond (silną więź) with him. He is a very happy person, always in a good mood (zawsze w dobrym humorze).
My grandparents (dziadkowie) from my mother’s side (ze strony mamy) are not alive anymore. Unfortunately I have never met my grandmother (babcia). I only know her from different stories (opowiadania) my mom used to tell me. She was a very nice person (miła osoba). My Grandfather (dziadek) died when I was 15 years old. He lived with us (mieszkał z nami) and loved to tell us stories about the past (opowiadania z przeszłości) and they were always fascinating (fascynujące). He would tell us about the war (o wojnie) when he was a soldier. He fought (walczył) in World War II (Druga Wojna Światowa) so I got the best history lessons (lekcja historii) straight from him. I miss him (tęsknię za nim) very much.
My grandparents from my father’s side (ze strony taty) live in the same village (w tej samej wiosce) as my parents. I get to see them each time I visit (odwiedzam) Poland.
I wish I spent more time with my family. We often talk on the Skype and we can see each other at the same time.
My husband (mój mąż) was born (urodzony) and raised (wychowany) in USA, but he has Greek origin (greckie pochodzenie) and still has family in Greece. He is the most wonderful person (najwspanialsza osoba) and he is my best friend (najlepszy przyjaciel). We got married (pobraliśmy się or wzieliśmy ślub) in Poland. It was an amazing wedding. It lasted three days! There was a lot of food, vodka, singing and dancing!
We have a beautiful (śliczna, piękna) daughter (córka) named Natalia. She just turned 9 months and is almost walking (prawie chodzi). She is a twinkle in our eyes (“naszym oczkiem w głowie”) and we can not imagine (nie możemy sobie wyobrazić) life without her.
My mother in law (teściowa) is just like my husband, very loving (kochająca) and warm (ciepła) and I’m very lucky (mam szczęście) that she lives so close since she visits often.
This is a short story of my family. I’m going to give you few more words you could probably use describing your loved ones.

About the Author: Kasia
My name is Kasia Scontsas. I grew near Lublin, Poland and moved to Warsaw to study International Business. I have passion for languages: any languages! Currently I live in New Hampshire. I enjoy skiing, kayaking, biking and paddle boarding. My husband speaks a little Polish, but our daughters are fluent in it! I wanted to make sure that they can communicate with their Polish relatives in our native language. Teaching them Polish since they were born was the best thing I could have given them! I have been writing about learning Polish language and culture for Transparent Language’s Polish Blog since 2010.

Wondering what village in Lublin???? Do you know of Bychawa???
Steve:
Thank you very much for the in-line Polish equivalents. By so perfectly providing context and interest, it is a learning tool of far greater value than lists of word translations. More please.
Marcel:
Kasia,
Thanks for all of the words and rich phrases. There are a few areas that may be helpful for you to empand on:
– In the US we have many second families (step siblings and parents and remarry).
For Pol-Ams it may be helpful to have words like great grandfather and mother (grandparents’ parents). Mine came from Poland.
Finally, what about brother-in-law and sister-in-law?
Thanks for your help!
Marcel

Hello! While searching various Polish translation sites, I came across your blog. I am hoping you can help me. I am trying to translate: God bless my family and friends, with two and four legs, on earth and in Heaven.
I think I came pretty close with what you see below. I am unsure if I need to make changes to show it is a female saying the words.
Boże błogosławże moją rodzinę i przyjaciele
Z dwoma i czterema nogami,
na ziemi i w niebiesiech.
Thank you in advance!

I have been browsing on-line greater than three hours lately, but I never discovered any interesting article like yours.
It’s beautiful value enough for me. Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made good content material as you probably did, the internet might be a lot more useful than ever before.
