Today I wanted to talk about different types of cars and how to name them in Polish.

In today’s blog we will talk only about cars (I will have another blog with trucks ready soon) which we call in Polish samochody osobowe (or you can just say samochody/samochód).

Most Poles have either sedan (sedan) or station wagons (kombi). I think that in Poland, just like in most European countries, small cars like that are the most popular. I do not see too many pick up trucks, although number of them has definitely increased within last few years.

Then we also have convertible cars, in Poland called cabrio. There are quite a lot of them, especially in big cities or in towns close to the sea. Speaking of the sea – there are some dune buggies there…They are used on the beach for fun, but also in professional buggy races. There is no specific word to describe them, but you can probably say pojazdy do jazdy po piasku/wydmach, which exactly means vehicle to drive on the sand/dunes. Sometimes they are called “garbusy na plażę”.

Then we have limuzyna (limousine) or taksówka(taxi), usually in big cities. Dżips (jeeps) are also very popular in Poland.

Of course we can not not forget about samochody policyjne (police cars), which are white and blue in Poland.

Last, but not least, we have samochody sportowe (sports cars). Very specific racing cars are called samochody wyścigowe or wyścigówki.
