Whenever we visit my family in Poland, my husband is always looking for english channels…And I’m sure you do the same while in Poland. However, if you can’t find anything you like in English, watching Polish show/movie could be a great way to practice Polish! The broad range of national and international TV stations is available from Cable TV or satellite TV.

Popular channels:

TVP1 – The oldest, widely known, national Polish TV station, which has been transmitting programs since it’s opening in 1953. It has mainly informative subject matter. Also important are movies and serials broadcasting from “The number one” and also performances of “Theater of Television”. One of the best known position in TVP1’ programme are: “5-10-15” (I’m not sure if it is still on air), “Dobranocka”(evening programme for children), “Information”- wiadomości), serials: “Klan”, “Lost”, “Heroes”, “Once Upon a Time… The Explorers”, “Plebania” or “The Bold and the Beautiful”.

TVN – A famous Polish, commercial TV station (from media group IT). The best known programms and serials are: “TVN Facts”, “Weathercast”, “Kryminalni”, “Na Wspólnej”, “Niania”, “Man on trees”, “Szymon Majewski Show”, Polish version of “Strictly Come Dancing”, talk-shows: “Rozmowy w toku” .

Polsat – First private television in Poland. It was opened in 1992. One of the best known and popular programms and serials: “Events”, “Sport”, “What about Poland?”, “Fear Factor”, “13 Station”, “Benny Hill”, “Prison Break”, “Desperate Housewives”, “The X-Files”, “CSI: NY”, “Baywatch”, “W.I.T.C.H.”.

TV Polonia – Polish public canal. Directed mainly to Poles living abroad. It’s programming is similar to this presented by TVP1. It offers among other things information in “Teleexpress”, replayed serials’ episodes like: “Klan” or “Na dobre i na złe” a

TVN24 – Commercial informative programme. It belongs to IT media group.

Ale Kino! – Polish movie canal. It transmits films from all continents and all of types.

Kino Polska – First and only channel which shows movies of only Polish production. Exists from 20 XII 2003.

MTV Polska – Polish equivalent of the best known American music television. It offers music programms with diverse music videos from all over the world and entertaining programs.

TVP Kultura – Fairly new Polish station (2005) about cultural subjects: movies, literature, music, theatre and folklore. 50% of it programms are archival.

TVN Turbo – Channel concerns everything about cars and motorcycles and also other fields of motorization. It transmits well-known British programme “Top Gear”. It programming is directed mainly to the male part of the public.
