While natal (Christmas) in Brazil is more family-oriented, o réveillon (New Year’s Eve) is all about celebrating in big style. The date is drawing to a close, so emotions must be running high to find the ideal location. So today’s post will list the most popular destinos (destinations) in the country for those looking for some excitement to mark the beginning of 2018.

Copacabana

Over 2 million people crowd the Copacabana praia (beach) in Rio de Janeiro for the famous display of fogos de artifício (fireworks) that are launched from the ocean. As the biggest festa (party) in the country, people from all over the globe gather to assistir (watch) the unique 17-minute show of pyrotechnic special effects. Some even opt for a cruise to catch a privileged vista (sight). This year’s theme is abraço (hugging), coming from a Gilberto Gil song that pays homage to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Live performance by major Brazilian musicians are also part of the event, including the main attraction – aside from the fireworks – the pop phenomenon Anitta. And while you’re at it, maybe linger on untill dawn to watch the stunning nascer do sol (sunrise).

Salvador

Another favorite option is the unforgettable experience of spending ano novo (New Year’s Eve) in the cidade (city) of Salvador, in the state of Bahia. Known as the capital do verão (summer capital), Salvador is primarily recognized by its spectacular carnaval festivities. So New Year’s Eve is no different, following the prolongued Carnaval model and lasting surprising cinco dias (five days)! From december 28th to January 1rst, a huge structure with a 800 m² stage hosts intense 70 hours of music and partying that draws over a million spectators. A number of remarkable Brazilian artists, like Pabblo Vittar, Wesley Safadão, Ivete Sangalo perform and even a ferris wheel composes the scenario. And with a festival of such large proportions, as the clock signals midnight, 15 minutes of explosive firework joy lights up the coast.

Paulista

Last but not least, one of the largest metropoles in the world wouldn’t disappoint us when it comes to celebrating New Year’s! The traditional night-long ceremony in the city of São Paulo takes place in its main avenue: Paulista. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the ruas (streets) or nearby buildings and hotels to check out the free live concerts in the massive stage organized by the city. This ano (year), the axé star Claudia Leitte is in charge of the countdown leading up to climax: 10 minutes of fireworks going ablaze and brightening up the evening amidst the tall buildings and thrilled urban crowds.
