Happy Birthday & Parabéns! Posted by on Nov 14, 2011 in Vocabulary

Today’s my birthday!! \o/ I love birthdays because they’re a great excuse to get all my friends together in one place and be happy (although lately I’ve been trying to not think of the getting older thing…), don’t you think?

We’ve gone over how to say happy birthday in Portuguese and how to sing happy birthday in Portuguese here on the blog, but we haven’t gone over other birthday and celebration vocabulary!!

So here are a few key words when it comes to aniversários!

Feliz Aniversário – Happy Birthday. Another word that is used that could also be used for “congratulations”, is, parabéns!

Festa – Party or celebration

Inferno Astral – Okay, so a little superstition, here!! The month before your birthday, is called your “astro hell” or what have you, because everything supposedly goes wrong. So it makes it better when your birthday comes along!

Clube de Festa – Party space/club/hall

Churrasco – Cookout (ok, so I usually celebrate my birthday with cookouts and thought this would be important!)

Soprar Velas – To blow out candles

Bolo – Cake!

Docinhos – Sweets usually served at kids’ birthday parties

Balão (ou Bixiga) – Balloons!

Receber Amigos – To have friends over/Invite friends somewhere

And to finish our birthday post, a song from my youth… Xuxa’s Birthday Song!! (Parabéns da Xuxa). See if you can find some of our vocab words in the song 🙂

When are your birthdays? What do you usually do to celebrate?
