If you grew up in the former USSR and had Russian in grade school, you will remember that most of your class time would be spent going over the numerous rules of that language. One of the aspects that often came up in my Russian classes was what is called паро́нимы. Паронимы are words that look similar, but have different meanings and are, therefore, frequently confused. Compare that to the English word paronymous, meaning “[h]aving a similar sound, but different orthography and different meaning.”

We have covered паронимы on this blog before, and an extensive list can be found online. Below are a few pairs of words that are often confused even by native speakers.

Усво́ить – осво́ить

Усвоить means “to grasp something mentally, to become accustomed to something.”

Ведь педаго́г объясня́ет те́му, пока́ её не усво́ят все ученики́. (The teacher explains the subject matter until all students have grasped it.) [С. Виноградов. Система Шаталова — в чем суть? // «Наука и жизнь», 2009]

Освоить means “to learn to use something, to start using something.”
Не́сколько дней спустя́ я поняла́: дело не в то́м, суме́ю я и́ли нет осво́ить компью́тер. (A few days later I realized — it’s not about whether or not I can learn to use a computer.) [Елена Павлова. Вместе мы эту пропасть одолеем! // «Даша», 2004]

Предоста́вить – предста́вить

Предоста́вить is “to make something available to someone, to provide something.” Предста́вить is “to present something, to introduce someone, to imagine (usually followed by себе).”

Конце́пция – конце́пт

Концепция is the general idea, design, or principle. Концепт is the specific idea or model.

Вероя́тно, это было свя́зано с англи́йской конце́пцией со́бственности, кото́рая си́льно отлича́лась от континента́льной (Фра́нции, Герма́нии), где со́бственность была́ еди́ной и недели́мой. (This might have had to do with the English notion of property, which was very different from the continental — French or German — notion, where property was monolithic and indivisible.) По предвари́тельным да́нным, Audi Q3 бу́дет предста́влена в ка́честве конце́пта уже́ в нача́ле сле́дующего го́да, а в сало́нах ди́леров она поя́вится в 2011 году́. Эффекти́вный – эффе́ктный

Эффективный is “efficient” in terms of outcomes. Эффектный is “striking, impressive.”

Заме́чу, что эффе́ктная вне́шность сохраня́лась у Арно́льда и в прекло́нные года́. (I should note that Arnold retained his handsome looks in his old age.) [И. Э. Кио. Иллюзии без иллюзий (1995-1999)]

Сего́дня уже́ существу́ет доста́точно приме́ров эффекти́вного сотру́дничества почто́вых ве́домств ра́зных стран в би́знесе де́нежных перево́дов.
