I don’t care a bit about that new astrological calendar, the one that says I am no longer a Leo. Sure I am! Otherwise, this picture of me and a lion in Peterhof makes no sense at all (and it does too, rrrrrr!)
Are you into «астрология» [astrology]? Unless you absolutely don’t give a hoot, you’ve heard of the latest «скандальная новость» [shocking news], the one about «знаки зодиака» [the Zodiac].
The now-famous article claimed that «изменение позиции земли по отношению к солнцу» [changes to the Earth’s position relative to the Sun] led to «изменение знаков зодиака» [the change in Zodiac signs] and to the introduction of the «тринадцатый знак» [thirteenth sign] – «Змееносец» [Ophiuchus].
Whether you believe in «гороскоп» [the horoscope] or not, it might be an excellent language learning tool. Particularly, if you read «предсказания» [predictions] for your sign week after week, you will learn a lot of excellent everyday words, including «осторожный» [careful], «удачный» [favorable], «удачливый» [lucky], «отношения» [relationships], etc.
But first, let’s review the astrological signs (I’m going to use the traditional Western horoscope also used in Russia. I don’t care much for this new, 13-sign, one since under it I am no longer a Leo):
«Овен» [Aries] – «21 марта – 20 апреля» [March 21st – April 20th]
«Телец» [Taurus] – «21 апреля – 21 мая» [April 21st – May 21st]
«Близнецы» [Gemini] – «22 мая – 21 июня» [May 22nd – June 21st]
«Рак» [Cancer] – «22 июня – 22 июля» [June 22nd – July 22nd]
«Лев» [Leo] – «23 июля – 22 августа» [July 23rd – August 22nd]
«Дева» [Virgo] – «23 августа – 23 сентября» [August 23rd – September 23rd]
«Весы» [Libra] – «24 сентября – 23 октября» [September 24th – October 23rd]
«Скорпион» [Scorpio] – «24 октября – 22 ноября» [October 24th – November 22nd]
«Стрелец» [Sagittarius] – «23 ноября – 21 декабря» [November 23rd – December 21st]
«Козерог» [Capricorn] – «22 декабря – 20 января» [December 22nd – January 20th]
«Водолей» [Aquarius] – «21 января – 19 февраля» [January 21st – February 19th]
«Рыбы» [Pisces] – «20 февраля – 20 марта» [February 20th – March 20th]
And now, on to the abbreviated horoscopes for the week of 21st-27th January (yeah, I know, we’re half-way through this period, but remember, we’re doing it mostly for language learning fun). I italicized phrases that I found most useful in daily conversations.
| Овен – звёзды советуют не делать скоропалительных выводов и набраться терпения. Не допускайте конфликтов и обходите острые углы. | Aries – the stars advise you to not arrive at hasty conclusions and be patient. Avoid conflicts and eschew sensitive issues. |
| Телец – уделите внимание своему здоровью. Старайтесь не переохлаждаться. Опасайтесь ложных и клеветнических обвинений. | Taurus – pay attention to your health. Try to stay warm. Beware of false and slanderous accusations. |
| Близнецы – возможны хлопоты с детьми, но постарайтесь проявить терпение. Проведение времени с партнёром поможет избежать разногласий. | Gemini – kids might be a handful, but try to be patient. Spending time with your partner will help avoid arguments. |
| Рак – проявите больше терпения при общении с родителями. Избегайте перестановки мебели. | Cancer – be more patient with your parents. Avoid rearranging furniture. |
| Лев – уделите повышенное внимание здоровью. Будьте внимательны на дороге. Не провоцируйте конфликты с братьями и сёстрами. | Leo – pay better attention to your health. Be attentive on the road. Do not provoke your siblings. |
| Дева – ограничьте расходы на досуг, иначе возможны материальные трудности. | Virgo – limit your leisure time expenses; otherwise you might encounter financial difficulties. |
| Весы – старайтесь не впадать в депрессию. Возможно, что вам не захочется заниматься домашними делами. | Libra – try not to get depressed. It’s possible that you might not feel like doing household chores. |
| Скорпион – не обращайте внимание на сплетни и игнорируйте попытки вывести вас из себя. | Scorpio – don’t pay attention to any rumors and ignore attempts to piss you off. |
| Стрелец – избегайте обсуждения материальных вопросов с друзьями, не давайте взаймы и не просите деньги в долг. | Sagittarius – avoid discussing financial matters with friends, do not lend money or ask to borrow money. |
| Козерог – вы можете столкнуться с препятствием к достижению планов в виде неуступчивого начальника, строгого отца, или просто неблагоприятных обстоятельств. | Capricorn – you might hit an obstacle on your way to achieving your goals, whether in the form of an unyielding boss, a strict father or just unfavorable circumstances. |
| Водолей – неблагоприятное время для любой секретной деятельности, особенно связанной с нарушением закона. | Aquarius – it is an unfavorable time for any secret activity, especially if it calls for breaking the law. |
| Рыбы – если вас что-то не устравивает, не торопитесь рвать отношения и сжигать мосты. Просто переждите неблагоприятные дни. | Pisces – if you are dissatisfied with something, do not rush to end relationships or burn bridges. Simply wait out the unfavorable days. |
Now that you know all this, you should be better prepared to face the annoying kids, pesky relatives, money-borrowing friends, and terrible bosses. Or at the very least, you’ll have plenty of very useful phrases to learn and use.
