In this Spanish lesson we will practice describing leisure activities with expressions of frequency in Spanish. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

This lesson is part of a Spanish course that practices the grammar and vocabulary first introduced in my beginner Spanish course posted here on the Transparent Language blog. Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

¿Qué haces…?: What do you do?
Los fines de semana: Weekends
Por la mañana: In the morning
Por la tarde: In the afternoon
Por la noche: In the evening

Now, play the audio to listen to a conversation between two friends talking about the different routines they have in their evenings. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:

Tom: María ¿Qué haces los fines de semana?
María: Los sábados por la mañana voy a clases de yoga, por la tarde escucho música y por la noche veo la tele.
Tom: ¿Y los domingos?
María: Los domingos por la mañana voy al monte, luego cocino. Por la tarde salgo con mis amigos y por la noche leo un libro. ¿Y tú qué haces los fines de semana?
Tom: Los sábados por la mañana voy de compras. Por la tarde escucho música y salgo con mis amigos. A veces voy al cine o a un concierto. Los domingos no hago mucho. Cocino y estoy en casa. Leo un libro o estudio español.
María: ¿Estudias español?
Tom: Sí, necesito mejorar mi español. Voy a clases de español tres veces a la semana.
María: ¿Qué días vas?
Tom: Los lunes, los miércoles y los viernes por la tarde.
María: ¿Y qué haces en las clases de español?
Tom: Hablo con otros estudiantes en español sobre diferentes temas. También aprendo gramática y leo libros en español.
María: Yo voy a clases de francés los martes por la tarde. Pero no hablo francés muy bien. Mi francés es muy básico.
