Intermediate theory video lesson 17

1. First, let´s see if you know how to conjugate El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo for all persons. I will say a person (yo, tú, nosotros, etc) and a verb and I would like you to make the correct conjunction of the verb .For example: “Nosotros / Comprar” = “Hayamos comprado”:

Vosotros / hablar
Yo / comprender
Él / ver
Usted / comer
Nosotros / ir
Ellos / hacer
Ustedes / decir
Tú / esperar

2. Next, let´s make some wishes using de El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo. How do you say these things in Spanish?

I hope you have bought chocolate.
I hope he has done the exam well.
I hope they have had a good time.
I hope Ana has left the party.
I hope you have read my book.
I hope we have been fair with you.

3. Now please tell me what these Spanish sentences of probability mean:

Quizás no hayas estudiado suficiente.
Quizás Sara haya ido a la biblioteca.
Posiblemente lo hayamos hecho mal.
Posiblemente hayas llamado al número equivocado.
Quizás hayan hablado ya con su profesor sobre el examen.
Posiblemente hayan visto ya esta película.

4. Let´s practice now how to make sentences expressing opinion in Spanish using El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo. What do these sentences mean?

No creo que hayas hecho nada mal.
No pienso que hayas comido nada en mal estado.
No creo que hayamos visto ya esta película.
No creo que hayan tenido una discusión fuerte.
No pienso que hayas estudiado suficiente.
No creo que hayais visto lo mejor de París.

5. Now I am going to say a few sentences with relative clauses which use El Presente de Subjuntivo and I would like you to transform each sentence into one using El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo. For example, if I say: “Necesito encontrar a una persona que estudie español” (which means “I need to find a person who studies Spanish”), you should say “Necesito encontrar a una persona que haya estudiado español” (which means “I need to find a person who has studied Spanish.”):

Busco a alguien que compre libros usados.
Necesito encontrar a alguien que hable con Sonia.
Buscamos personas que tengan animales.
Mi hermana necesita a alguien que viaje a Barcelona.
Ellos buscan a una persona que compre mucha ropa.
Queremos a alguien que sea simpático contigo.

6. Finally, let´s practice El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo with temporary sentences. I am going to ask you some questions and after I will say a verb in infinitive and I would like you to answer using El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo. For example if I say “¿Cuándo vas a ir a casa? (terminar), you should say “ Voy a ir a casa cuando haya terminado”:

¿Cuándo vas a venir? (hablar con Lola)
¿Cuándo vas a terminar de estudiar? (memorizar todo)
¿Cuándo vas a ir a Nueva York? (leer la guía de viajes)
¿Cuándo vas a barrer el suelo? (limpiar la cocina)

Esto es todo por hoy.

I hope you are clearer now on how to use El Pretérito Perfecto de Subjuntivo. As you see, it is used in the same type of sentences as El Presente de Subjuntivo, so it is not as difficult as it looks in the first place. As always, try to make lots of practice sentences in Spanish using this tense with the uses of subjuntivo that you know, so you get more familiar with it.

¡Feliz Navidad y hasta pronto!
