In this lesson of our English Spanish Parallel Texts course and we are going to practice discussing clothing in Spanish. Start by reading the text in Spanish below. The English translation is provided later but please try not to look at it until you have read the Spanish version various times and tried your best to understand it.
There may be some words and phrases in the text that you are unfamiliar with, but you should be aiming to capture the main essence of what is happening. There will always be words and phrases popping up in real-life situations that you have never heard before, so it is important never to get too distracted by details.
If you want to investigate some of the words you don’t know with a dictionary that would be great, please do, but do this after trying your best to understand with what you already have in your head.

Spanish Text
María: ¿Qué tipo de ropa llevas para trabajar?
Olivia: Llevo un traje y corbata.
María: ¿Tienes que llevar traje y corbata?
Olivia: Sí. Todos los hombres y mujeres en la oficina deben llevar traje y corbata. Sin embargo, los viernes llevamos ropa de sport.
María: Yo no tengo ni traje ni corbata.
Olivia: ¡¿De Verdad?!
María: Soy una diseñadora de moda autónoma y trabajo desde casa. Normalmente llevo pijama.
Olivia: ¡Eso suena genial! Tienes mucha suerte. ¿Qué tipo de ropa diseñas?
María: Moda femenina. Vestidos y faldas con mucho color. También a veces diseño pantalones de mujer. Siempre con colores llamativos. Rosa, rojo, amarillo…
Olivia: ¿Tienes alguna foto?
María: Sí mira. Estos son mis diseños
Olivia: ¡Guau, estos vestidos son preciosos! ¿Cuánto cuesta ese?
María: Ese cuesta 500 euros.
Olivia: Vale, eso es un poco caro para mí, lo siento.
María: Sí, ¡son demasiado caros para mí también!
Olivia: ¿Quieres ir de compras a la gran vía ahora?
María: ¡Buena idea! ¡Vámonos!
English Text
María: What kind of clothes do you wear to work?
Olivia: I wear a suit and tie.
María: Do you have to wear a suit and tie?
Olivia: Yes. All the men and women in the office have to wear a suit and tie. However on Fridays we wear casual clothes.
María: I don’t own a suit or a tie.
Olivia: Really!
María: I am a self employed fashion designer and I work from home. I usually wear my pyjamas.
Olivia: That sounds great! You are very lucky. What kind of clothes do you design?
María: Women’s fashion. Dresses and skirts with lots of colour. I also sometimes
design women’s trousers. Always with bright colours. Pink, red, yellow…
Olivia: Do you have any photos?
María: Yes, look. These are my designs.
Olivia: Wow, these dresses are beautiful! How much does this one cost?
María: That one is 500 euros.
Olivia: OK, that is a little expensive for me, sorry.
María: Yes, they are too expensive for me too!
Olivia: Do you want to go shopping in the high street now?
María: Great idea! Let’s go!
