In this Spanish lesson we will practice speaking Spanish in a pharmacy. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Here are some useful structures and vocabulary to help you with the listening:

Venda: Bandage
Jeringuilla: Syringe
Jarabe: Syrup/Cough mixture
Algodón: Cotton wool
Aspirina: Aspirin
Alcohol: Alcohol
Tirita: Plaster
Pastilla: Tablet
Crema/Pomada: Cream
Spray: Spray
Receta: Prescription

Necesito algo para la tos: I need something for a cough
Necesito algo para el dolor de …: I need something for a pain in…
¿Podría recomendarme algo eficaz?: Could you recommend something good?
Yo que usted tomaría este jarabe: If I were you I would take this syrup/cough mixture
¿Qué dosis debo tomar al día?: What dose must I take a day?
¿Le importaría repetir?: Could you repeat please?
Una cucharada cada ocho horas: One tablespoon every 8 hours
Tres veces al día: Three times a day
Aquí tiene. ¿Necesita algo más?: Here you are. Do you need anything else?
No nada más: No, nothing else
¿Cuánto es?: How much is it?

Now play the audio to listen a conversation in a pharmacy. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Pharmacist: Hola, buenos días
Lola: Hola. Necesito algo para el dolor de garganta. ¿Le importaría recomendarme algo eficaz? Me duele mucho.
Pharmacist: Vamos a ver… Yo que usted tomaría este jarabe.
Lola: Vale, muy bien. ¿Qué dosis debo tomar al día?
Pharmacist: Una cucharada cada seis horas.
Lola: ¿Cómo? ¿Le importaría repetir?
Pharmacist: Una cucharada cada seis horas. Cuatro veces al día.
Lola: Vale, muchas gracias.
Pharmacist: Aquí tiene. ¿Necesita algo más?
Lola: Sí, una caja de aspirinas y una caja de tiritas.
