In this Spanish lesson we will practice using Spanish imperatives with direct object pronouns. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Here are the grammar rules of how to create Spanish imperatives with direct object pronouns:

Lo: It
La: It
Los: Them
Las: Them

Míralo: Look at it (friendly)
Mírala: Look at it (friendly)
Míralos: Look at them (friendly)
Míralas: Look at them (friendly)

No lo mires: Don’t look at it (friendly)
No la mires: Don’t look at it (friendly)
No los mires: Don’t look at them (friendly)
No las mires: Don’t look at them (friendly)

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

Bolso: handbag
Mochila: rucksack
Terciopelo: velvet
Devolver: to return something
Desagradecido/a: ungrateful

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two people. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Sara: Peter, ¿Has visto mi bolso? No lo encuentro.
Peter: Míralo, está ahí.
Sara: ¿Dónde?
Peter: Ahí, pero no lo cojas.
Sara: ¿Por qué no?
Peter: Te he comprado esta mochila. Tócala, es de terciopelo.
Sara: ¡Guau! ¡Qué suave!
Peter: ¿Te gusta?
Sara: Sí, me gusta. Pero devuélvela a la tienda.
Peter: ¿Qué dices? ¿Por qué?
Sara: Porque prefiero mi bolso. No necesito una mochila.
Peter: Pero en la mochila puedes meter muchas más cosas que en tu bolso. Ábrela, es muy grande. Mírala..
Sara: No, no, no la abras. Llévala a la tienda. Prefiero mi bolso. Dámelo.
Peter: Vale, tómalo. Qué desagradecida.
