Hey, how’s it going?

Spanish has contractions with prepositions and definite articles in some cases. Let’s learn them!

A + artículos

al (a + el) – Ellos van al teatro todos los sábados. – They go to the theater every Saturday.
a la – Ellas van a la universidad por la mañana. – They go to the university in the morning.
a los – Es más fácil enseñar idiomas a los niños. – It is easier to teach languages to children.
a las – Ella se dedica a las artes en general. – She dedicates herself to arts in general.

DE + artículos

del (de + el) – Quiero saber el precio del reloj. – I want to know the price of the watch.
de la – Quiero saber el precio de la blusa. – I want to know the price of the blouse.
de los – Hablamos de la necesidad de los trabajadores. – We talk about the needs of workers.
de las – Hablamos de la necesidad de las mujeres. – We talk about the needs of women.

EN + artículos

en el – Ella está en el restaurante. – She is in the restaurant.
en la – Él está en la playa. – He is at the beach.
en los – Es fácil encontrarlo en los bares. – It’s easy to find him in bars.
en las – Él confía en las profesoras. – He trusts the teachers.

POR + artículos

por el – Caperucita va caminando por el bosque. – Little Red Riding Hood is walking through the woods.
por la – Estamos caminando por la calle. – We’re walking along the street.
por los – Ella se esfuerza por los hijos. – She makes an effort for her kids.
por las – Él hace eso por las personas ancianas. – He does that for the elderly.
