Spanish Lesson Intermediate 9 Spanish Present Subjunctive to express opinions Posted by on Dec 15, 2010 in Spanish Grammar, Spanish Vocabulary, Videos

Hola, ¿Qué tal?

Hoy vamos a ver cómo usar el Presente de subjuntivo para expresar opinión.

When we use opinion verbs in affirmative, the verb after “que” is in indicative. If the opinion verb is in negative, then the verb following “que” is in subjunctive.

Let´s see some examples:

Creo que + indicativo: I believe that:

  • Creo que Ana es muy simpática: I believe that Ana is very friendly

No creo que + subjuntivo: I don´t believe that:

  • No creo que Ana sea muy simpática: I don´t believe that Ana is very friendly

Pienso que + indicativo: I think that:

  • Pienso que Ana es muy simpática: I think that Ana is very friendly

No pienso que + subjuntivo: I don´t think that:

  • No pienso que Ana sea muy simpática: I don´t think that Ana is very friendly

Me parece que + indicativo: It seems to me that:

  • Me parece que Ana es muy simpática: It seems to me that Ana is very friendly

No me parece que + subjuntivo: It doesn´t seem to me that:

  • No me parece que Ana sea muy simpática: It doesn´t seem to me that Ana is very friendly

Para mí + opinión (afirmativa o negativa) en indicativo: For me:

  • Para mí, Ana es muy simpática: For me, Ana is very friendly
  • Para mí, Ana no es muy simpática: For me, Ana is not very friendly

A mi modo de ver + opinión (afirmativa o negativa) en indicativo: From my point of view:

  • A mi modo de ver, Ana es muy simpática: From my point of view, Ana is very friendly
  • A mi modo de ver, Ana no es muy simpática: From my point of view, Ana is not very friendly

When we make evaluations we use the subjunctive after “que”. Let´s see the typical evaluation structures:

Me parece + adjetive/adverb +que + subjuntivo: It seems to me + adjective/adverb + that + subjuntivo:

  • Me parece increible que algunas personas no reciclen: It seems unbelievable to me that some people don´t recycle

Está + adverb + que + subjuntivo: It is + adverb + that + subjuntivo:

  • Está mal que usemos el coche cuando no es necesario: It is wrong that we use the car when it is not necessary

Es un/una + noun + que + subjuntivo: It is a + noun + that + subjuntivo:

  • Es una pena que haya tantos incendios en verano: It is a pity that there are so many fires in the summer

When we wish to confirm something that is obvious, a reality, we use the indicative in the verb after “que”. Let´s see the structures we use:

Es + cierto/evidente/verdad/indudable + que + indicative: It is + true/obvious/unquestionable + that + indicative:

  • Es evidente que tenemos que ahorrar energía: It is obvious that we have to save energy

Está + claro + que + indicative: It is clear/obvious + that + indicative:

  • Está claro que las inundaciones crean muchos problemas: It is clear that floods create many problems

This is all for today. I hope after seeing this video you feel more confident about choosing whether or not to use the subjunctive when you are giving opinions. For sure initially you will have to think carefully about the structure and whether to use indicative or subjunctive, but after a while the right verb will come to you automatically. As always, it is just a case of patience and practicing as much as possible.

¡Que tengáis un buen día y hasta la próxima!
