Intermediate theory video lesson 22

1. First, let´s practice the easiest way to order something in Spanish: just say what you want. You can add “por favor” at the end if you wish, but in Spain this is not expected or necessary. We are often very direct with things like this and nobody takes offence. I will say a few food and drinks in English and I would like you to order them in Spanish:

Two expresso coffees
One portion of chips
A bottle of mineral water
A bottle of red wine
Three beers
Some olives
A bit of bread

2. Next, let´s practice ordering things with Spanish imperatives. I will say a verb (poner or traer), if I am asking for something for me or us (yo or nosotros), and if the situation is formal (formal) or informal (informal). So, for example, if I say “traer, yo, formal” you should say “traígame”:

Poner / nosotros / informal
Poner / yo / formal
Traer / yo / informal
Poner / yo / informal
Traer / nosotros / formal
Traer / nosotros / informal

3. Now, let´s practice ordering using some questions with the verb “poner” in a formal way. I will say some things you have to order and whether it is for me or for us, so you need to make the question. For example, if we start with the verb “poner” and I say “unos calamares / nosotros” you should say ¿Nos pone unos calamares?:

Un café con leche / yo
Una paella / nosotros
Una jarra de sangría / nosotros
Un bocadillo de jamón / yo

Now let´s do the same in an informal way:

Un sandwich de jamón y queso / yo
Unas aceitunas / nosotros
Una botella de agua / nosotros
Una botella de cava / nosotros

4. Next, we will practice the same thing as in the previous exercise, but we will now use the verb “traer”. First let´s make some questions in a formal way:

Un bocadillo de chorizo / yo
Unas patatas fritas / nosotros
Unas tapas / nosotros
Un poco de queso / yo

Now let´s do the same in an informal way:

Un té / yo
Un chocolate caliente / yo
Dos cafés descafeinados / nosotros
Otra botella de vino blanco / nosotros

5. Finally, let´s practice some more questions but this time using the verb “poder”. Please try to translate the following questions in a formal way:

Can you bring me a bit of cheese?
Can you bring us more water?
Can you put to me a beer?
Can you put to me a glass of red wine?

Bueno, ya hemos terminado la clase de hoy.

I hope you found it useful. Remember not to use “Can I…” / “Puedo” or “Me gustaría” / “I would like”. You might have the temptation to use these expressions in order to be more polite, but don´t. In Spain we are very relaxed and direct about these types of things and people don´t expect you to be so polite. The most important thing is to enjoy your food and drink!

¿Hasta pronto!
