¡Hola! ¿Qué tal?

I 2010 I wrote a small article with some expressions we use to tell stories. Let’s suppose you already know some Spanish, you master the grammar and now you want to go deeper and master Spanish conversation. Here are some very, very useful sentences you can learn (because they’re ready-made).

Learning tip: try and memorize small batches of five to ten small sentences or expressions every day. You’ll see how your Spanish is going to improve in no time!

Contando historias

Ya te he contado lo que pasó… – Have I told you what happened…
No me voy a olvidar de… – I’m not going to forget to…
No vas a creer lo que pasó… – You’re not going to believe what happened…
Para que te cuento. – I have to tell you something!
Deberías haber visto… – You should have seen…
Mejor dicho… – I mean…
Cualquier día… – One of these days…
Eso ocurrió en… – This happened in…
Yo estaba en… – I was in…
Estaba yendo hacia… – I was going to…
Estaba volviendo de… – I was coming back from…
Me habían pedido que… – I’d been asked to…
Me estaba dando cuenta… – I realized…
Entonces yo dije… – So I said…
Entonces el tipo dijo… – So the guy said…
En ese momento… – At this moment…
Y de pronto… – And suddenly…
Bueno, cuando eso pasó… – Well, when that happened…
Sin más ni menos. – For no reason at all.
Ocurrió todo tan rápido. – Everything happened so fast.
No supe que decirle. – I didn’t know what to tell him/her.
En aquella época yo… – At that time I…
Y entonces me di cuenta que… – And then I realized that…
Me quedé pasmado. – I was shocked.
Y pensé conmigo mismo… – And I thought to myself…

Tú sabes como es cuando… – You know what it’s like when…
¿Puedes creerlo? – Can you believe that?
¿Te lo imaginas? – Can you imagine that?
¿Te imaginas como me sentí? – Can you imagina how I felt?
En el momento creí que era una buena idea. – At the moment I believed it was a good idea.
¿Cómo yo podía saber…? – How could I know…?
Cuando me di cuenta, ya estaba en el medio de la calle. – When I realized, I was in the middle of the street.
No, espérate, que todavía no terminó… – No, wait, it’s not over yet…
La peor parte fue… – The worst part was…
Y para colmo de males… – And to make things worse…
No habría sido tan malo, pero… – It wouldn’t have been so bad, but…
Por suerte… – Luckily…
Estaba empezando a sentirme… – I was starting to feel…
Por supuesto que yo… – Of course I…
De todos modos decidí… – Anyway, I decided to…
Y entonces, por un milagro… – And then, as a miracle…
Si no fuera por ella… – If it wasn’t for her…
… yo habría… – I would have…
Te juro por Dios. – I swear to God.
Si no lo hubiera visto con mis propios ojos, no lo habría creído. – If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.
Parecía una escena de una telenovela. – It was like a soap opera scene.
Aprendí con la lección. – I learned from this lesson.
Moral de la historia… – The moral of the story is…
