Prepositions are easy to understand although not that easy to use. Their use is rather similar both in English and in Spanish, but some prepositions are not that easy to learn. At least two Spanish prepositions are frequently confused by English-speaking learners since they both translate to “for” in English: por and para.

Let’s have a look at examples and ways to use them correctly.

We use por for the following purposes:

• Frequency and velocity:
  Sale a cenar tres veces por mes.
  La bicicleta va a 20 kilómetros por hora.
• With the meaning of “on behalf of”:
  Lo hice por ella.
  Firmé por mi compañera para que no notaran su ausencia.
• Meaning of “along” or “through”:
  Salimos a pasear por el parque.
  Cuando viajo en tren me gusta mirar por la ventanilla.
• Means of communication:
  He comprado un perfume por internet y me lo enviarán por correo.
• Meaning of “because of”:
  Por el frío, se me ha puesto roja la nariz.
  No podremos ir al cine por su culpa, por su estado de salud.
• Exchanges and sales:
  Este sabor de helado no me gusta, te lo cambio por el tuyo.
  Consegui comprar una falda por 35 pesos.
• To express actions that still need to be completed:
  Quiero ir a dormir y tengo los platos por fregar y la casa por barrer.
• Duration in time:
  Por mucho tiempo pensé que no volveríamos a vernos. 

Use para for the following purposes:

• With the meaning of “in order to”:
  Para llegar a tiempo, tomaremos el metro.
  He decidido darme de baja en el gimnasio para ahorrar dinero.
• With the meaning of “intended for”:
  Para la fiesta de despedida compré muchas sorpresas.
  ¿Todas esas críticas son para mí?
• With destination:
  ¿A qué hora sale el tren para Cuzco?
  ¿Falta mucho para Plaza Cataluña?
• A future moment in time:
  Para la clase que viene hay que traer dos trozos de tela y unas agujas.
  Me dijo que lo tuviera listo para el lunes.

There are many expression with por and para that you will have to learn by heart.

• por favor (please)
• por fin (at last)
• por lo menos (at least)
• por lo visto (apparently)
• por mí (as far as I am concerned)
• por si acaso (just in case)
• por supuesto (of course)
• para más inri (to make matters worse)
• para siempre (for good)
• para variar (just for a change)
• para colmo (on top of that)

• para que (so that)
