Let’s check out some work and career related vocabulary in Spanish today.

contratar / emplear – to hire

Si la demanda se mantiene en alta, precisaremos contratar a un nuevo asistente.
If demand keeps growing, we will need to hire a new assistant.

En aquella empresa me emplearon por un año para realizar tareas contables.
In that company they hired me for a year to do some accounting work.

echar / despedir – to fire, to lay off

Esa fábrica tuvo que echar a muchos obreros debido a la crisis financiera.
Thattes les factory had to fire many workers due to the financial crisis.

La mayoría de los empleados despedidos fueron contratados nuevamente después de superada la crisis financiera.
Most of the laid-off workers were hired back after the financial crisis was overcome.

empleador – employer
empleado – employee

Esa fábrica de automóviles es la mayor empleadora de la región.
This car factory is the biggest employer in this region.

Acabaron de contratar a tres nuevos empleados para el departamento de ventas.
They have just hired three new employees for the sales department.

agencia de empleo – recruitment agency

Ella decidió ir a otra agencia de empleo para buscar otro trabajo.
She decided to go to another recruitment agency to look for another job.

compañero de trabajo/colega – co-worker
comedor – cafeteria

Rodrigo suele almorzar con sus compañeros de trabajo en el comedor de la empresa.
Rodrigo usually has lunch with his co-workers at the cafeteria.

Departamento de Recursos Humanos – Human Resources Department

A Pedro lo contrataron para trabajar en el departamento de recursos humanos de una compañía importante.
Pedro was hired to work in the Human Resources department of an important company.

de/a tiempo completo– full-time
de/a tiempo parcial – part-time

David trabaja a tiempo completo en una agencia de publicidad.
David works full-time in a marketing agency.

Julia está buscando un trabajo de tiempo parcial.
Julia is looking for a part-time job.

franco – day off

Siempre termino por estudiar en mis francos.
I always end up studying in my days off.

turno – shift

Muchos empleados trabajan en el turno de la noche.
Many employees work in the night shift.

Trabajé doble turno y estoy agotado. Solo quiero ir a casa y dormir.
I worked a double shift and I’m exhausted. I just want to go home and sleep.

adicto al trabajo – workaholic

No me sorprende que los amigos de Andrés lo consideren un adicto al trabajo pues no piensa en otra cosa.
It’s no wonder Andrés’ friends consider him a workaholic because he only thinks about that.
