How does Sweden use the Internet? Posted by Stephen Maconi on Aug 29, 2012 in Culture
Sweden is one of the most connected countries in the world when it comes to technology and Internet usage. The Swedish government does not block websites, so Swedish citizens are allowed access to all available information on the Internet, especially due to their typically very satisfactory English skills.
But what does Sweden actually do on the Internet?
According Alexa Internet, an online service that provides Internet usage statistics for nearly the entire world, Sweden is most active on the search engine Google. It lists google.se, the localized Swedish Google, as the most visited site in Sweden, and google.com as the third. The online social community Facebook is ranked second, while in the rest of the world it is ranked first and Google second. Just beyond Google comes YouTube and thereafter Aftonbladet, a popular Swedish national newspaper. In the remaining top 20, Wikipedia, Windows Live, and LinkedIn make appearances as well as Twitter and the popular Swedish-founded P2P torrent downloading site, The Pirate Bay.
By looking at these statistics, you can see that Sweden is very in touch with the rest of the world. Services like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are in very high demand. It’s no wonder that so many Swedes go abroad every year to study or work – the world is always in their grasp!
Which of these sites do you use on a daily basis? Are they popular in your country? What kind of restrictions does the government of your country place on its citizens’ internet usage, if any?
