What I like about Sweden… Posted by on Dec 29, 2011 in Culture, Living in Sweden

It is important to bring up the positive and special things about your own country. To start off with I want to mention some of my favorite things about Sweden:

The safety and honesty we are surrounded by.

So much nature to retreat to, so close to cities. The calmness found on a long walk, the knowledge that you have freedom to pick berries or mushrooms if you find any.  Just walking surrounded nature is completely relaxing.

Lastly, the acceptance of freedom of speech and opinion. In Sweden you can write, say and wear whatever you want. You are allowed to demonstrate for whatever cause you want as long as you apply for permission first, however weird or strange things you believe in. But people who think differently also have the right to express their views on the demonstration and can therefor also demonstrate. I believe it is very important to be this democratic, to let everybody say what they think, in order not to forbid any opinions et.c

These are things which are easy to forget in the busy bustle of our lives, but which mean so much to us. I could continue the list a great many more rows, but instead I would love to hear what things other people treasure of appreciate about Sweden.

What I love about Sweden is the way most Swedish men treat their women. The treat them as equals in everything and they are wonderful supportive fathers who share in the caring of the children…that is amazing. I had never in my life seen so many men pushing strollers in business suits in my life. I was going to school one day and saw 3 fathers, all with strollers, standing together laughing and talking while one of them changed their babies diaper….I know my mouth was standing wide open foolishly but then a huge grin came over my face and I knew I was in love with this magnificent country. That kind of thing is almost unheard of in America. Just taking a long walk by myself or with my Swedish husband is one of the greatest joys I get to experience in Sweden. It’s my Eutpoia. Sweden ROCKS!

Hey people, I’m from Spain and I stayed in Sweden for like a week in a students exchange. I loved it.
I loved seeing nature everywhere and also the people. They were very polite, civic and respectful, nothing to do with us Spaniards. And I loved the high schools and the educational system (at least the schools i visited). After being there, my school in Spain looks a prison.
Just hope I can go back to Sweden in the future 😀

I love the history, the traditions, the architecture (both in the city and the county), the scenery, the food, the people…..I love it all!

    Hi Daphne.

Yes, I guess seeing dads with strollers is quite common in Sweden, though I have to say it is waaaay more common in the cities.

There’s actually a new word for some of these dads, or should I say nickname?
    It’s “lattepappa”, plural: “lattepappor”.

A lattepappa is more of metrosexual man, that spends as much time with their child as the mom does. Lattepappor can often be seen in groups at cafés drinking caffé latte(hence the nickname), and they often have fashion sense and are seen as “feminine” by a lot of people.

They also often strive to kind of “break” the social gender differences that society have made, that are not actually due to nature – and also raise their kids to become individuals for who they are without the aspects of what should be expected or considered “normal” for either a girl or a boy to be or act.

There are lattemammor too, but its the dads that have made the discussion going in media as the moms act as moms “always had”.

I hope this made sense, it is kind of hard to explain 🙂
