There are three different cases for when ได้ dai3 can be used. You can identify which case to use by determining if there is a noun or a verb before or after ได้.

 

Case 1: To mean ‘can’.

Use this when ได้ comes right after the verb.

 

I can do it.

ผมทำได้

Pom5 tum1 dai3

 

I cannot do it.

ผมทำไม่ได้

Pom5 tum1 mai3 dai3

 

Can’t eat.

กินไม่ได้

Gin1 mai3 dai3

 

Can get it

รับได้

Rap4 dai3

 

Case 2: To make a verb past-tense.

Use this when ได้ comes right before the verb.

 

Received

ได้รับ

Dai3 rap4

 

I ate it.

ผมได้กินมัน

Pom5 dai3 gin1 man1

 

I saw it already.

ผมได้เห็นแล้ว

Pom5 dai3 hen5 laew4

 

Case 3: To mean ‘receive’ or ‘have gotten’.

Use this when ได้ comes right before a noun.

 

John got food.

จอห์นได้อาหาร

Jawn1 dai3 aa1haan5

 

He got candy.

เขาได้ขนม

Kao5 dai3 k2nom5

 

She got a chance to go travel.

เขาได้โอกาศไปเที่ยว

Kao5 dai3 oo1gaat2 bpai1 tiew3
