Today is Friday and we’re getting ready for the weekend so let’s finish our week with a tip that will help you to learn and improve your Portuguese: how to use onde and aonde.

Onde (where) is used to indicate the place where you are or where something is happening. It is usually used with verbs that express state or permanence.

Onde você está? [Where are you?]
Onde você vai ficar nas próximas férias? [Where are you going to stay on your next vacation?]
Discrimine of locais onde as tropas permanecerão estacionadas. [Specify the places where the troops will be stationed.]
Não sei onde começar a procurar. [I don’t know where to start looking.]

Aonde (where… to) indicates the idea of movement or closeness. It is opposed to onde, which gives an idea of being far. It is usually used with movement verbs like ir [to go], chegar [to arrive], etc.

Aonde você vai? [Where are you going?]
Aonde você quer chegar com essa atitude? [Where are trying to go with that attitude?]
Aonde devo dirigir-me para obter esclarecimentos? [Where do I have to go for information?]
Não sei aonde ir. [I don’t know where to go.]
